Geographical Location

Espezel is located on the Plateau de Sault in the Aude Pyrenees. The Cathar Trail (GR367) passes through the village, which serves as a stage along the route. The section between Puivert and Comus was changed in 2025 at the level of Espezel and Roquefeuil; trail markings and signposting were adjusted accordingly.

Nature

The Route des Sapins is a route of around 96 kilometres around the Pays de Sault. It passes through extensive forests and along high-altitude paths, crosses villages, and includes mountain passes and valleys at elevations ranging from 600 to 1,500 metres. The excursion route from Espezel to Belvis offers views of the Tabe Massif, including Saint-Barthélemy and Soularac, as well as the Ourtiset.

Trails and Activities

Mountain bike circuits around Espezel are listed on the Espace VTT-FFC Aude en Pyrénées map. The Ronde des Sapins in Espezel is an 11-kilometre trail run in natural surroundings with an elevation gain of 350 metres, which can also be completed as a hike.

Culture and Gastronomy

The Borne fontaine de l'enfant au canard is located on Rue de Belfort, at the washhouse in the village of Espezel. It is a three-sided decorative cast-iron fountain set on a stone basin with two water outlets.

The Moulin de dessus, also known as the Moulin de Ferran, is a ruined water mill. The Moulin du Roc, also known as Roc del Mouli, is fully functional but not in operation.

The Espezel livestock fair includes a food market and gastronomic workshops. It also features a farmers' market with producers bearing the Pays Cathare label. The potato from the Pays de Sault is celebrated every year from late August to early September during the harvest season.

Espezel can be reached from Limoux via the D620 in a southerly direction.
