Culture and History

The cloister of the Ancienne abbaye de Montbenoît was protected as a historic monument in 1846 and again in 1914. The abbey church was protected in 1922, with the exception of the bell tower.

Montbenoît Abbey is the only surviving medieval religious complex of comparable significance in the Doubs département. Inside the abbey, the Musée de la République du Saugeais presents an overview of the République du Saugeais with educational panels, medals and various donated objects.

Trails and Landscapes

The Vy aux Moines is a medieval trail created by monks from Môtiers in Switzerland in the 12th century to reach the canons of Montbenoît. It begins at Montbenoît Abbey. The French section is marked in yellow and blue and designated as a combined hiking and mountain biking route.

The Malsaron loop is an easy 6.1-kilometre circuit. It begins and ends at the abbey car park in Montbenoît, is marked in yellow and blue, and can also be ridden by mountain bike. Along the way, it follows the picturesque Route de Chez Noël through an area with typical Comtois farmhouses decorated with traditional tuyés.

The Chemin du Train is a greenway laid out along the route of the former railway line between Pontarlier and Gilley. Since November 2012, it has had an asphalt surface along its entire length and is suitable for scooters, roller skis and all types of bicycles.
