Winter and Nature
The Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura covers around 178,000 hectares and extends across the departments of Doubs, Jura and Ain. The landscape of the Haut-Jura includes high combes and ridges, plateaus, enclosed valleys, gorges and waterfalls. Open habitats include bogs, dry grasslands, meadows and alpine pastures.
The “Tourbières et lacs de la Montagne jurassienne” site is France’s first mountain Ramsar site. Lac Narlay is 40 metres deep, making it the deepest natural lake in the Jura. Three religious institutions were successively located on Île de la Motte in Lac Ilay.
Hiking Routes
The Tour des quatre lacs is a 10.8-kilometre circular route with a duration of three hours and a moderate level of difficulty. It is marked as a GR and PR route. The Échappée Jurassienne is a 352-kilometre marked GR hiking route through the Jura Massif from west to east.
Culture and History
The Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans was begun in 1775 as a major work of Enlightenment industrial architecture. The Doubs cycling route offers an approximately 30-kilometre detour to this site.
The Grande Saline in Salins-les-Bains operated for 1,200 years before closing in 1962. It has been open to visitors since 1966 and documents 1,200 years of salt production in Franche-Comté. It includes a 165-metre-long underground gallery with a 19th-century pump that is still functional.
Culinary Experiences
In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, gourmet routes connect producers, markets, notable restaurants, cellars, farms, workshops and culinary events. Comté is considered a characteristic specialty of Franche-Comté. Comté fruitières are generally cooperatively organised village organisations whose roots go back eight centuries; Comté is produced traditionally in around 140 village cheese dairies.
