Winter sports and trails
The Chastreix-Sancy cross-country skiing area comprises four trails and two connecting routes, totalling 15.6 kilometres. The snowshoeing area consists of a circular trail and two connecting routes that lead through the forest and high-altitude areas. Snowkiting is also possible in Chastreix-Sancy.
You can go ski touring in the Plaines brûlées and the Fontaine Salée glacier valley, either alone or with a qualified guide. Dog-sled rides lead through the area's expansive landscapes and most beautiful forests. Near Chastreix, horseback excursions with Patou lead into the Fontaine Salée glacial cirque. The Boucle Sancy Ouest route passes through the Chastreix-Sancy Nature Reserve and crosses the Chastreix-Sancy ski area.
Natural environment
The Chastreix-Sancy Nature Reserve covers the southern slope of Sancy and includes the Fontaine Salée glacial cirque. It is freely accessible to people who comply with its regulations and can be reached via the GR30, GR4 and seven PR hiking trails. Hiking, horse riding on designated paths, alpine skiing and cross-country skiing are permitted in the protected area; mountain biking is prohibited there.
The Tourbière de Rimat peat bog covers six hectares, is up to ten metres deep and features a variety of natural habitats. At the Cascade des Essarts, the La Gagne River flows over basalt columns and plunges into a basin covered with rocks and stones.
The Bois de la Masse hiking trail begins at Place de l’Église in Chastreix and passes streams, a beech forest, heathland, a peat bog, a lava flow, stone crosses and a bread oven. The Sentier d’interprétation de Chastreix leads to a Gallic bridge, a shepherd's hut and the legend of Pas du diable; it also takes you to a waterfall and historic livestock watering troughs. On the Les hauts de Chastreix route, the hamlet of La Vessaire is home to a bread oven and a wayside cross.
The Maison de la Réserve Naturelle de Chastreix-Sancy is an educational exhibition space about the nature reserve and the Regional Natural Park of the Volcanoes of Auvergne. The Maison de la Réserve is also a meeting place for events and the starting point for numerous walks.
Culture and local history
The Église Saint-Bonnet is a rectangular church dating from the early 14th century, with a nave comprising four bays and a southern portal from the 15th century. It was classified as a historic monument in 1907 and is freely accessible every day throughout the year.
The Roc de Courlande is a 1,496-metre-high summit made of trachy-andesite, offering exceptional views. The path to its summit is marked by three statues of the Virgin Mary, which are associated with the site's long-standing pilgrimage tradition.
