Murat-Le-Quaire: Hotels and accommodations

Village and history

The “Patrimoine rural de Murat-le-Quaire” tour takes 30 minutes to one hour and leads through the village. Numbered information panels provide details about the Ferme Château, fountains, barns, the church, fortification walls and the promontory, the bread oven and the washhouse, as well as a small mill.

This village mill is a true-to-scale replica of a real watermill. Its waterwheel is powered by water from the stream in Les Couderts. The Eglise Saint-Maurice is a medieval church from the 13th century that was restored several times in the 19th century; a partial reconstruction was completed in 1902. Its features include a baptismal font carved from Volvic stone, an enameled lava altar and a painting by P. de Plument.

The Scénomusée Toinette et Julien presents two centuries of Auvergne history through light shows, music, moving objects and special effects.

Lake and landscape

The Plan d'eau du Pré Cohadon can be walked around in about 15 minutes. The 2.5-hectare lake lies above Murat-le-Quaire and near the Banne d’Ordanche. Its panoramic views make it popular for recreation and fishing.

The themed route “SANCY TOUR No. 2 – Le chemin de l’estive ovine” near Murat-le-Quaire leads through the open landscapes of the Banne d'Ordanche. It provides insights into sheep farming, summer pasture management and the local mountain fauna.

The mountains of Bois de Charlannes, Le Tenon, Puy Gros and Puy de Lachaud are located in the vicinity of Murat-le-Quaire. La Banne d’Ordanche is a 1,515-m-high basalt cone known for its landscapes. Daffodils bloom there in spring; the viewpoint offers panoramic views of Artense, the Sancy Massif, the Dordogne Valley, La Bourboule, and the Puys de la Tache and de la Monne.

La ferme des Estives offers a guided tour lasting about one hour on the production of Saint-Nectaire AOP, available by reservation.

The historic site of Abbaye de la Vassin lies in the wider region surrounding Murat-le-Quaire. Also located in this wider regional area are the Abbaye de l'Esclache monastery, Château de Val and the ancient site of Temple of Mercurius.
