Winter and Nature

Espace Somport includes a wellness area with a sauna and an outdoor hot tub on a terrace overlooking the Pyrenees. The “Terre de rencontres” discovery trail has five nature-observation stations.

Hiking route no. 20 to Lac d'Estaens is rated easy and takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes on foot. On the French side, it passes through the Parc national des Pyrénées and offers beautiful views of the high valley. During the season, visitors can buy cheese at the Cabane d'Escouret.

Hiking and Landscapes

The route from Urdos to Somport leads from Gare d'Urdos to Col du Somport along the Way of St. James through the high-altitude Aspe Valley region and provides access to the geological treasures of the upper Aspe Valley.

Route no. 67 to Refuge du Larry begins at the former customs buildings in Urdos and passes through a wild valley with extensive pastures where shepherds and sheep can be found. It climbs up to Refuge du Larry, located at an altitude of 1,724 metres. At Estive du Larry, visitors can meet the shepherd and taste cheese made using traditional methods.

Culture and History

The Tunnel du Somport on the Pau–Canfranc railway line was built from 1910 to 1914 by the Compagnie du Midi. It was electrified and put into operation in 1928. In Urdos, the Tunnel du Somport is listed as a Monument historique.

Fort du Portalet stands in Urdos on a rocky cliff above the Gave d'Aspe. Guided tours take visitors through the galleries, barracks and ramparts of Fort du Portalet.
