Světnov is located in the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The Světnovské údolí Nature Monument includes a meandering stream and its floodplain; significant meadow communities as well as meandering waterways with numerous protected plant and animal species are protected there.

Nature and Trails

In spring, protected spring snowflakes cover the banks of the Světnovské údolí. The best time to visit the valley is around the end of March and beginning of April, when the spring snowflakes are in fullest bloom. A hike into the Světnovské údolí follows a forest path along the Sklenský potok into the valley. The cycling route from Žďár Castle leads to the Světnovské údolí Nature Reserve.

History

Světnov was founded before 1293 through the colonisation activities of Žďár Monastery; the first written mention dates from 1366. The poet, writer and professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University Prokop Paeonius was born in Světnov in 1581.

Cultural Monuments

A chapel replaced Světnov’s old wooden bell tower in 1854. In the northern part stands a stone cross from 1848, while in the southern part, on the old road, there is a wayside shrine from 1719. After the First World War, two memorials to the fallen were erected in Světnov.

The stone road bridge over the Stržský potok in Světnov was built in 1847 to replace an older wooden bridge and is a cultural monument. The Křížový kámen is a sandstone bearing a carved cross with trefoil-shaped ends. It stands on an old path in the forests of the Světnovské údolí and probably commemorates the death of a Russian officer when troops were returning through the Bohemian lands after the Napoleonic Wars.
