Culture and History
The Cistercian monastery in Vyšší Brod is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic and offers several sightseeing routes. The monastery complex includes a medieval fortified structure with the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary; the church is also part of the sightseeing routes. The complex is also home to the NTM Postal Museum, which presents the development of postal and telecommunications services as well as the history of postal transport.
The first written reference to Vyšší Brod dates from the founding charter of the Cistercian monastery dated 1 June 1259. The Cistercian monastery was founded in 1259 by the Rožmberk family. The beginnings of Vyšší Brod are connected with trade along one of the oldest trade routes linking Bohemia with the Danube region.
The Church of St. Bartholomew and its adjoining cemetery in Vyšší Brod are cultural monuments.
