Lienz: Culture, Nature and Trails for Your Stay

Lienz combines historic buildings with trails through forests and landscapes, destinations by the water and regional everyday culture. Historic Lienz in the Cityscape

Bruck Castle is a castle built by the Counts of Gorizia that has stood high above the city of Lienz for more than 750 years. At the same time, Bruck Castle is a venue for exhibitions and concerts. The building therefore combines its long history with cultural uses.

Liebburg was built by the Counts of Wolkenstein as a residential palace between 1605 and 1608. Since 1988, it has served as Lienz City Hall. A sacred building already stood at the site of St. Andrew's parish church in Lienz in the 5th century. This span of time extends from late antique religious history to modern residential architecture and makes the city center interesting for visitors who would like to include several historical eras in their plans.

The Isel Tower is part of Lienz's partially preserved city wall. The medieval fortification at the Isel Tower dates from 1311 and goes back to an expansion of the city of Lienz. Those interested in urban development, military architecture and preserved structures in the townscape will find two closely connected historical facts here: the tower as part of the city wall and the medieval expansion as a chronological reference.

Culture and Regional Everyday Culture

A cultural and historical tour of Lienz includes 56 destinations. This makes it possible to plan a day in the city as a series of individual historical stops rather than focusing on a single building. For the culinary and regional side, the “Stadtmarkt Lienz” farmers' market is part of the experience. It takes place every Friday and Saturday in the historic artisans' street, Messinggasse. The fixed days of the week give the market a clear place in a stay intended to combine sightseeing with regional shopping.

Trails Between the Railway Station, Forest and Mountain Landscape

The Iseltrail connects Lienz with the glacier terminus at Umbalkees in Hohe Tauern National Park. The first stage of the Iseltrail can be reached from Lienz Central Station by train or bus and a short walk.

The “Fairy-Tale Trail” leads partly through dense forest to Hochsteinhütte at an altitude of 2,023 meters. Along the family hiking trail in Family Park, there are 15 adventure play stations.

Water, Gorge and Via Ferratas

Galitzen Gorge is located where the Galitzenbach flows into the Drau. The gorge features the “Water Experience Trail” as well as several via ferrata routes. No specific level of difficulty or suitability is established by this.

Lake Tristach is considered the only natural bathing lake in East Tyrol.

Cycle Path and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The Aguntum Museum is located along the Drau Cycle Path. Weiherburg Castle is situated in the surrounding area of Lienz.
