Prägraten Am Großvenediger offers a specific local connection to skiing, as well as a range of mountain and nature activities for a ski holiday. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether skiing, a multi-day high-alpine route or individual destinations along the Isel will shape your stay. These options differ in the type of activity and the characteristics of the tours.

Skiing in the area

The Prägraten a.G. family ski area is located on the western edge of town and has two lifts. It operates seasonally. If the lifts are a deciding factor for your travel dates, check the operating hours for the specific period and plan your stay accordingly. The two lifts provide the local skiing option; the town’s other destinations offer a different focus from a day on the slopes.

Mountain hiking and via ferrata

The Venediger Höhenweg is a high-alpine trail from Prägraten a.G. to the Gschlösstal valley, with up to eight stages. This makes it a multi-stage long-distance hike: the number of stages describes how the route can be divided and is not equivalent to a single short excursion. Prägraten also offers challenging mountaineering, varied long-distance hiking and enjoyable hut-to-hut hiking. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between challenging mountaineering, longer hikes and a focus on mountain huts.

The Rote Säule via ferrata is a different type of route: it is secured throughout with a steel cable and rung ladders; the start can be reached from the Sajathütte in 15 minutes. This time refers to the approach from that hut. Check your equipment and the conditions before climbing.

Waterfall trail and cross-country skiing

The Umbalfälle Water Nature Trail is located by the Umbalfälle waterfalls in Hohe Tauern National Park. Its 14 viewing platforms showcase the immense power of the water and the ecology of the Isel Gorge. The trail therefore offers a different focus from a multi-stage hike or a via ferrata: water and landscape are at the centre, and the stops explore these themes.

The Unterfeldloipe is an easy cross-country skiing tour along the Isel, with views of the Großvenediger. It is a standalone winter option alongside the local ski area and mountain tours. Snow and operating conditions vary by season; if you plan to go cross-country skiing, check the conditions for your travel dates. This helps distinguish the different activities rather than treating them as a single offering.

Widder procession and planning your visit

The Widder procession to the pilgrimage church of Maria Schnee takes place every year on Weißsamstag, the first Saturday after Easter. In Obermauern, the Rogation processions from Prägraten and Virgen meet; together, they lead a white ram decorated with ribbons and flowers to the church. The Widder procession has been listed in Austria’s UNESCO Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2015. If you would like to plan your visit around this occasion, check the date for the year in question; the exact arrangements may vary from year to year.

For getting around town, there is a bus stop called “Prägraten am Großvenediger Gemeindeamt.” Check the timetable for bus connections and departure times on your travel dates.
