Winter Activities in Innervillgraten
Two toboggan runs lead through the surroundings of Innervillgraten and Kalkstein:
- The unlit “Sandbergweg” toboggan run begins near the village centre of Innervillgraten.
- The “Alte Kalksteinerweg” toboggan run in Kalkstein is 2 kilometres long and has an average gradient of 4 to 8 percent.
The starting points are therefore located near the village centre of Innervillgraten and in Kalkstein, respectively. The Innervillgraten Kneipp Trail includes an artificial lake that is not suitable for swimming, a natural Kneipp trail, a barbecue area, a tree hut and numerous play facilities.
Hiking Trails and Mountain Landscape
A short hike to the Oberstalleralm begins at the Unterstalleralm in the rear part of the Villgraten Valley. The Oberstalleralm is a listed alpine village with 18 historic mountain huts and a chapel. The mountain huts were first mentioned in 1675.
The viewing platform at the Klapfbach Waterfall is linked to a circular hiking trail. It can be reached on foot from the Unterstalleralm snack station in around 10 minutes. This time indication refers to the walk from the snack station to the platform, not to the entire circular hike. The long-distance hiking trail “Herzass” runs in five stages over 70 kilometres of trail along 50 peaks around the mountaineering villages of Außer- and Innervillgraten.
The Sinkersee natural monument can be circumnavigated along a fenced path. A guided hike leads via the historic smugglers’ trail into the Gsies Valley.
Culture in the Valley
The Maria Schnee pilgrimage church in Kalkstein dates from 1660. Inside, it features a simple star-ribbed vault and a pointed-arch chancel arch. These architectural elements shape the interior of the church. Innervillgraten is also home to the “Alpine Life” open-air museum at the entrance to the Arntal Valley. It displays restored examples of rural working culture and architectural culture, including a fulling mill, a mill, a farmstead, an alpine hut and an entrance house.
The two cultural attractions are located in different places: Maria Schnee is in Kalkstein, while the open-air museum is at the entrance to the Arntal Valley.
The museum’s working facilities include the fulling mill and the mill, while the farmstead, alpine hut and entrance house illustrate rural architectural culture. In the fulling mill, pre-woven wool is pounded and fulled in hot water until it becomes dense loden cloth. The fulling mill has been in operation for more than 200 years. The historic equipment also includes the Lüftermühle, a historic flour mill with a barley roller. The “Neuhauser” farmhouse is an authentic farmhouse dating from between 1700 and 1740.
Regional Cuisine
At Gannerhof, product selection is based on genuine regionality and uncomplicated cuisine with plenty of finesse.
The Wegelate Sawmill is the last of a total of eight water-powered sawmills that once stood in Innervillgraten and the surrounding area. It was carefully renovated in 1993 in keeping with its original style, preserving its historic design.
