Sankt Jakob In Defereggen: Winter, Nature and Culture

Sankt Jakob In Defereggen combines winter sports with nature and cultural experiences. Throughout the entire winter season, St. Jakob in Defereggen offers cross-country skiing opportunities with many kilometres of trails. The Bruggeralm route offers a different experience: it is a freeride route with 10 downhill variants. This means that different forms of winter sports are available side by side, without this allowing any general statement to be made about snow reliability, slope conditions or the daily range of activities.

Winter Sports and Water Experiences

At the Wassermythos Ochsenlacke at Mooseralm in the St. Jakob ski centre in the Defereggental valley, experience stations in the form of playable water animals are located along the circular trail around the reservoir. The destination can be reached by gondola lift and the chairlift to Mooseralm. This means that, for a stay appealing to people with different interests, there is a specifically described experience destination in addition to the winter sports activities. At the southern edge of St. Jakob in Defereggen, there is also an extensive water nature playground directly on the Schwarzach, with a small side arm branching off from the main river. The Haus des Wassers is located west of the centre of St. Jakob in Defereggen, in the district of Oberrotte. A programme run by Hohe Tauern National Park includes practical water analyses and water experiments in which participants actively take part. The offering is therefore not merely a visit, but an active engagement with water. For an understanding of the landscape, it is also important to note that 123 km² of the municipal area of St. Jakob in Defereggen is protected as part of Hohe Tauern National Park. The Oberhauser Zirbenwald is considered the largest contiguous Swiss stone pine forest in the Eastern Alps.

Local History and Special Attractions

The valley museum “Zeitreise Defereggen” was opened in 2005 in the basement of the music pavilion in St. Jakob in Defereggen. In terms of content, the museum focuses on archaeological finds and is not a local folklore museum. The largest object on display is a dugout canoe made of Swiss stone pine, recovered in 2000 and approximately 1,000 years old. It was found at Obersee, or at Staller Sattel, at an altitude of 2,000 m and is so far considered the only known dugout canoe made of Swiss stone pine. The parish church of St. Jakob in Defereggen also offers a clearly identifiable historical reference point: it was first mentioned in documents in 1299. As a building, it is a relatively rare example of a Neoclassical church in Tyrol and a simple hall church with three flat domes. The origins of the Jagdhausalm settlement date back to the 13th century; its stone houses date from the 16th century.

Healing Water World with a Fixed Visiting Format

The Deferegger Heilwasserwelt offers exclusive guided tours for groups by appointment throughout the year. The walk to the Heilwasserwelt along the Mythenweg trail, with sculptures by artists from East Tyrol, can optionally be included or omitted. The Deferegger Heilwasserwelt also includes a Kneipp fountain. For planning a stay, the visiting format is therefore particularly important: the guided tour is a group offering by appointment, not an ongoing visit that is freely accessible.
