Landeck between Venet, culture and Kaunergrat

A stay in Landeck combines winter sports with an unusually rich cultural and natural setting. The Venet ski area is accessible from Landeck-Zams railway station: from there, it is a 15-minute walk to the valley station; alternatively, bus routes 1, 240 and 250 operate. Culture around Landeck Castle and the Via Claudia Augusta

Landeck Castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century by the Counts of Ulten on a high rock above the Inn. Today, it is a landmark of Landeck as well as an events and cultural centre with a permanent exhibition on history. This exhibition presents history in fifteen themed rooms using original objects and original documents. In addition, the gallery in the castle displays exhibitions by contemporary artists from the regional and international scene, as well as presentations on current and historical topics.

Landeck Castle is located directly on the historic Roman road Via Claudia Augusta. In the Landeck area, this road largely ran along the slope between the Inn bridge near Starkenbach and Landeck, before continuing over the “Platte” to Fließ. There, wheel tracks from different periods can be seen in the rock. The Via Claudia Augusta Documentation Centre also explores this history: it displays a copy of the Tabula Peutingeriana as well as Roman artefacts discovered along the Via Claudia Augusta.

The Tyrolean Castles Trail connects several historic sites over 65 kilometres and can be hiked in five daily stages. Landeck Castle, Biedenegg Castle, Wiesberg Castle, Schrofenstein Castle Ruins and Kronburg Ruins are located directly along the route. At the waypoints, the Castles Trail app provides audio, video and text information and also serves as a navigation system. The Landeck Castle Museum offers special Swabian Children guided tours for groups of ten or more; advance registration is required to arrange an appointment.

Altfinstermünz offers further historical insights. Guided tours of the complex are available for groups of eight or more during opening hours with advance registration and begin at the visitor centre. The castle chapel of Berneck Castle, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, contains significant Late Gothic frescoes. These include an altar fresco depicting Saint John. Along the southern side of Berneck Castle, a gallery also runs across a 130-metre-high rock face and offers a view into the depths.

Kaunergrat Nature Park and paths through the landscape

Kaunergrat Nature Park extends from the Upper Inn Valley to the Ötztal Alps and encompasses the Pitztal, the Kaunertal and the municipality of Fließ. Across 590 square kilometres, it contains natural and cultural landscapes that can be explored along themed trails and on guided hikes. The Piller Moor educational trail is laid out there as an easy, barrier-free circular hike of approximately 3 kilometres. Seven information stations and an 11-metre-high moor tower accompany the route.

Wildlife observation is also among the documented nature experiences in Kaunergrat Nature Park. On Nature Watch excursions, you can observe chamois, ibex and marmots. The glacier educational trail leads from a moraine dating from around 1850 to the glacier terminus of the Gepatsch Glacier. Along the way, it provides information about glacial traces as well as the animal and plant life.

A distinctive landscape impression can be gained along the 26-kilometre Kaunertal Glacier Road. It passes through changing landscapes with alpine meadows, Swiss stone pine forests, mountain lakes, waterfalls, moraine slopes and glacial ice. The various landscape forms make the route especially interesting for visitors who want to experience mountain nature not just from a single viewpoint, but in several successive sections.

On the Pillerhöhe, the Brandopferplatz documents the region's distant past. The burnt offerings began in the Middle Bronze Age, approximately between 1600 and 1200 BC, and continued for more than 1,000 years. The Moosbruckschrofen hoard comprises 350 bronze objects from the Middle Bronze Age. Together, the two sites give the landscape an archaeological dimension that extends beyond the medieval castles and Roman transport routes.

Winter experiences in the Kaunertal

In the Kaunertal, visitors can travel barrier-free on the Karlesjochbahn cable car to an altitude of 3,108 metres, as far as the Italian-Austrian border. The Kaunertal Snowpark is located directly below the Karlesjochbahn and includes, among other features, a jib line, a kicker line and a natural run.

The connection between landscape and technology is also evident at the Alpinarium Galtür. It forms part of a 345-metre-long and 19-metre-high avalanche protection wall and combines protective infrastructure with an exhibition centre. In Zams, it is possible to visit a demonstration power station at Zammer Lochputz. City bus route 1 runs to the “Zams Lochputz” stop at Zammer Lochputz, making this destination easy to include in a practical day plan.
