Ski boots

Ski boots transfer movement from your legs to the bindings and affect control and comfort all day. Choose them by foot shape, ability, use and real comfort rather than colour or one stiffness value. See the ski equipment overview.

A well-fitting ski helmet is part of the safety and equipment check.

Key facts

  • The heel should be held without painful pressure.
  • Try boots with your planned ski socks.
  • A liner settling does not fix excessive space.
  • Beginners do not necessarily need the stiffest boot.
  • Rental boots need fitting and a short test.
  • Dry boots properly after skiing.

Check the fit

With a thin ski sock, the toes may lightly touch the liner while standing. When the knees bend, the foot moves back and the heel should lift very little. Pain, numbness or strong slipping means another fit is needed. Width and volume differ between models; children should not use oversized boots simply as a growth reserve.

The closure should tighten evenly. After several minutes, bend your knees, shift your weight forward and walk a few steps. Pressure at the ankle, instep or toes indicates another fit is needed.

Stiffness, ability and use

Stiffness should match body weight, ability and intended use. A hard sports boot can react precisely but needs an active technique; a softer boot may suit beginners and relaxed skiing. Manufacturer ratings are not fully comparable. The boot must fit the bindings and skis.

Buy or rent

Buying suits regular skiers who have found a reliable fit. Rental is flexible and practical for children or occasional days. Check liner, closures and sole, and report pressure immediately. A poor fit rarely improves during the day.

Socks, warmth and care

Use flat, functional ski socks rather than several thick layers. Dry shell and liner separately where possible, away from strong heat. Store boots open and dry and check closures, soles and cracks.

Equipment check before the holiday

Check fit, closures and drying before departure. Children should try boots shortly before travelling. If renting at the resort, allow time for fitting and a short test.

Frequently asked questions about ski boots

How tight should ski boots be?

They should hold the heel and provide direct contact without painful pressure, including after several minutes with bent knees.

Can I wear thick everyday socks?

Proper ski socks without folds are better; thick socks can restrict circulation and comfort.

When should I buy ski boots?

Allow time to try them with your ski socks and test them before departure.
