Alpine skiing in France: successful season in the Alps

Alpine skiing in France: successful season in the Alps
Alpine skiing in France: successful season in the Alps
According to official statistics, the last 2011-2012 season was quite successful for the French Alps. The number of tourists visited ski resorts in France at the famous peaks increased compared with the previous year by 2%.

At the same time, according to the DFS organization, which unites 236 lift operators throughout France, ski season in the southern part of the country was not successful as it was in the north, reported by the French TV channel France 3. A number of resorts in the French Pyrenees were forced to close earlier due to the lack of snow. However, most local operators reported that the season was not failed, but remained at the same level as last year.

In total, ski resorts in France account for 55 million of ski presences (ski presence is the number of days spent by a skier at the resort). However, despite the significant growth France failed to reach the level of the most successful pre-crisis 2007-2008 season, when the total number of ski presences was estimated at 59 million.

The most successful ski holiday region in France was Savoy. Despite the weak start of the season, in January the situation was changed. The increase became possible due to many skiers from Belgium and Holland.

Isere is the department in the Rhone-Alpes region, which, according to local operators, had one of the most successful seasons of the past decade. And it is not surprising as there are a large number of French ski resorts, including Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes.
February was the best month of the 2011-2012 ski season in France. Due to heavy snowfalls almost all resorts in the French Alps recorded a significant increase in tourists.

The Alps are the main ski region of France. In total they account for 80% of the ski tourist traffic of the country.
