Nature
The village of Le Lieu is surrounded by an extensive forest in the Vallée de Joux. To the east of Le Lieu lies Lac Ter, fed by the Ecluse and Séchey streams. Long stretches lined with reeds run along its shores.
In summer, Lac Ter attracts anglers targeting perch, roach, gudgeon and pike. A path in the Le Lieu area overlooks Lac de Joux and offers several viewpoints.
Culture
The St-Théodule church in Le Lieu has an elongated octagonal floor plan. Its corner tower was built between 1798 and 1802 and reconstructed in 1859–60.
In Les Charbonnières, one of the villages of Le Lieu, the Musée du Vacherin Mont-d’Or presents the history of the cheese from the Vallée de Joux. The museum displays objects and documents relating to its artisanal production and offers baked Vacherin as well as other local products.
Local cuisine
Vacherin Mont-d’Or AOP is produced from September until the end of winter, matured for 21 days and wrapped in spruce bark. The cheese has been protected under the AOP designation since 2003.
The Hôtel de Ville du Lieu restaurant serves traditional cuisine and market-style dishes featuring meat, along with seasonal recommendations.
Other offerings
The Plainoz mountain farm offers overnight stays in straw as an experience of Alpine life. The Chalet des Plainoz, located above Le Lieu, serves terroir dishes. From its terrace, views extend towards Mont Tendre and Dent de Vaulion.
