Nature and Trails
The Rapilles-Covatannaz natural forest reserve was created in 2013 and includes Sainte-Croix among its areas. In the immediate vicinity of Sainte-Croix, it encompasses the foothills of the Gorges de Covatannaz, with steep slopes, rock faces, limestone scree and specialized forests.
A marked footpath from Sainte-Croix railway station follows the Gorges de Covatannaz towards Sainte-Croix or leads down to Vuiteboeuf. The trail uses old rutted tracks described as unique in Switzerland and passes erratic boulders and bat caves. For the route through the Gorges de Covatannaz, there is a return-route option via international route 70 of the Via Francigena.
Industrial History
At the beginning of the 20th century, Sainte-Croix became a world capital of music boxes. The Atelier du Dr Wyss recreates a music box workshop from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
MuMAPS was created through the merger of the Musée des Arts et Sciences, the Musée Baud and the Centre International de la Mécanique d’Art (CIMA). The museum is housed in a historic building erected by Paillard in 1900 and presents Sainte-Croix’s regional heritage through music boxes, automata, typewriters and Bolex cameras.
La Balade Industrielle is a 3.5-kilometre educational route covering 18 emblematic buildings from the history of Sainte-Croix. It is freely accessible every day of the week.
