Trails and Landscape
The Roca de Canalda is almost two kilometres long and reaches a height of more than 200 metres in some places. A circular route at the foot of the rock face begins in the village of Canalda and runs from east to west along its entire length. The different route options give you the opportunity to compare trails by course and theme. From Els Colls, there is a sweeping view over more than half of Catalonia.
The GR 1 crosses the municipality of Odèn from Canalda to la Valldan; white and red markings identify the trail. The Roca de Canalda, Balmes route passes beneath the Coves del Moros. The Volta per Canalda route includes a botanical nature trail and passes a section that is also marked with the white and red signs of the GR 1.
Rock and Climbing
The Canalda climbing area comprises four multicoloured conglomerate walls. Climbing is possible at the Roca de Canalda all year round; the climbing routes there are up to 300 metres long. In this rocky landscape, long routes stand alongside a trail focused on botany and scenery.
Culture and History
The square apses of the Romanesque parish church of Sant Julià in Canalda date from the 9th or 10th century. On Puig-arnau stands a small chapel dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist. Puig-arnau is also home to one of the largest and oldest farmhouses.
The caves of the Roca de Canalda have been inhabited for a long time; some of them were still inhabited until a few decades ago. The Coves dels Moros hang halfway up the rock face and cannot be accessed without climbing equipment. One of the caves still preserves a stone wall. At Ca l'Andreu, only the walls of the main building remain, while Espluga de Melera consists of a group of three caves with no buildings.
Ca la Rita, also known as Cal Cavallol, is a two-storey dwelling in the largest cave of the Roca de Canalda. The building was formerly known as Cal Llop and subsequently as Cal Cavallol; the year 1819 is engraved at the entrance and on the opening of the oven.
Connections and Festivals
Canalda is connected by a regional road to Odèn and Sant Llorenç de Morunys via the Coll de Jou. A local road also connects the village with Lladurs and Solsona.
The Festa Major de Canalda normally takes place on the weekend closest to the feast of La Mercè. On Saturday evening, there is a concert of traditional music, as well as sandwiches for those who would like to have dinner.
