Masella – Slopes, Summits and Mountain Trails

The Masella ski resort is located in a dense pine forest, and 90% of its slopes face north. An uninterrupted descent runs over 935 m from La Tosa at 2,535 m to Pla de Masella at 1,600 m. From the summit of La Tosa, the panorama extends across the whole of Cerdanya and a large part of Catalonia.

Skiing

The “Familiar” ski slope connects La Pleta with Pla de Masella and has an elevation difference of 420 m. At more than 6 km, the “Dues Estacions” ski slope is the longest slope in Masella and starts at the summit of La Tosa on the eastern side of the ski resort. For planning the day, the two slopes can be compared based on their connection, route length, elevation difference and starting point.

Trails

The ascent to La Tosa begins at the Coma Oriola car park at 1,922 m in the Masella ski resort. The route from Coma Oriola to La Tosa is considered the shortest and most direct way to reach the summit on foot. The Masella–Niu de l’Àliga cable car takes you to the start of the “Circuito de las Minas” circular route near the Niu de l’Àliga mountain refuge. The 9 km-long “Camins dels Miners” route crosses a chairlift and the drag lifts of the Masella ski resort and leads to mines approximately 200 m below the Niu de l’Aliga refuge. The trails differ in starting point, elevation, type of transport and route length; these details help to sort the options in advance.

The trails can therefore be categorized using several specific features side by side: the start at the car park, access by cable car, the direction toward La Tosa, the stated route length and the approximate location of the mines below the refuge. These differences make the route description easy to follow.

Nature

The “Camins dels Miners” route offers views of the Serra del Cadí, the Penyes Altes de Moixeró, Pedraforca and Puigllançada. In the immediate surroundings of Masella are the mountains Montaña de Alp and La Tosa, as well as the summit of Cap del Serrat Gran. The summit of Les Suquetes is also located nearby. The names and spatial references mentioned help distinguish the landscape features from one another.

Culture

The “Circuito de las Minas” circular route at La Tosa features outcrops of Devonian limestone and marine fossils such as goniatites. Another destination is La Molina. In the wider regional surroundings of Masella are the Museu Municipal De Llívia, a museum; Pedra Dreta, an ancient site; the Mirador De La Figuerassa, a viewpoint; and the Santuari de Queralt, a church.
