Gúdar: Mountain Landscape, Trails and Religious Buildings

Gúdar has a typical mountain landscape with extensive pine forests, grazing areas and numerous springs. From its elevated location, Gúdar offers views over the valley of the Río Alfambra. The themes of nature, culture and trails can be considered separately when planning your trip.

Nature

In the Barranco de las Umbrías along the PRTE-33, there are clear, tranquil pools. The Cerro de los Siete Lugares is a natural viewpoint overlooking the neighbouring villages’ grain fields and the surrounding Sierra. The Pino Lentejas is designated as a monumental tree. The stretch of river and its banks described on the Gúdar–Río Blanco–Gúdar route form part of the Reserva Natural Fluvial del río Alfambra. The Fuente de los Caños is described as a worthwhile destination for day-trippers. La Dehesa is a picnic area among the pines.

Culture

The Iglesia de Santa Bárbara is a three-nave church with a higher central nave and vaulted side aisles. The interior contains paintings dated to 1882. Its tower has a square ground plan, an octagonal upper section and a stone spire built on an octagonal base.

The Ermita de Santa María Magdalena can be reached from the centre of Gúdar via the uphill Calle de la Magdalena. It has medieval origins. The Ermita was Gúdar’s former parish church and is associated with the town’s first settlement site on the Peña de la Magdalena.

Trails

Stage 02 of the GR 199 leads downhill from the Valle de Motorritas along the Río Alfambra and passes the Fuente del Cura and the Vega de Gúdar. The GR 199 – Senda Fluvial del Alfambra runs from its source in the Valle de Motorritas in Gúdar to the Ríos Bajos near Galve. Stage 02 from Gúdar to Allepuz is 6.9 kilometres long and has a stated duration of 1 hour and 55 minutes. It is catalogued as a Sendero Turístico de Aragón.

The Ruta de las Mariposas de Gúdar includes six panels on the biology, ecology and conservation of butterflies, as well as trail markers and directional arrows. It begins at the Ermita de Santa Quiteria in the Valle de Motorritas and ends at the Fuente del Cura in the Vega de Gúdar.

A 16.5-kilometre mountain-bike route leads from Gúdar to the Ermita de Santa Quiteria in the Valle de Motorritas. This route passes through the Valle de Motorritas, where there are masías and corrales with attractive dry-stone structures.
