The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Lesce is one of the most significant Baroque monuments in the Gorenjska region. It also preserves the oldest signed fresco in Slovenia. Its complex includes a free-standing bell tower with a Gothic portal bearing the date 1522–23. Thus, the church’s Baroque significance, a clearly dated architectural element and a distinctive example of Slovenian art history stand side by side in one place.
Another insight into the region’s culture can be gained during a guided visit to the Čebelarski center Gorenjske. History
The old village center of Lesce includes former farmsteads. Their owners once practiced farming and trade; this former use is therefore part of the village center’s traditional character. Individual buildings also reveal different periods. The Legatova hiša manor house at Begunjska cesta 6 is an example of a rural manor house from the early 17th century. The Španova hiša displays the typical form of a residence belonging to prosperous farmers from the 18th and 19th centuries and has a small corner tower.
The historical depth reaches back even further: archaeological finds in Lesce date from the Roman period and the Early Christian period. Thus, architectural evidence from the early modern period and the 18th and 19th centuries stands alongside finds from two clearly earlier periods in the village.
Getting Around
