Vrhnika between the Ljubljana Marshes and Cultural History

Vrhnika lies on the southwestern edge of the Ljubljana Marshes, near the sources of the Ljubljanica. In the town and its surroundings, wetlands, geological features, historical landmarks and trails of varying lengths come together.

Nature and Landscape

Močilnik is a spring valley with cliffs up to 40 m high, also known as Hudičeve skale. In the valley of the Bela stream, Star maln preserves a mill wheel and a weir from the former mill. Below Jelovec lies Lintvern, a karst swallow hole and the source of the Bela stream. It releases water at irregular intervals; between eruptions, the stream may partially or completely dry up.

Near Bevke lies Mali plac, a raised bog covering just under two hectares and designated as a nature reserve. The Kucler Quarry was declared a natural monument of geological importance in 1991. It contains fossils of mussels and other microfossils; a geological column also displays the rocks of the wider area.

The Kotnik-Lenarčič Park in Verd was created by the Kotnik family in the 19th century. The park contains a ginkgo tree that is now considered one of the older trees of its species in Europe. Kameni Vrh and Ljubljanski Vrh are located in the immediate vicinity of Vrhnika, while Srebotnik and Vinji Vrh are in the surrounding area.

History and Culture

The Lovrenčič House, also known as the Old Post Office, stands on the banks of the Ljubljanica at the site of a port that existed until 1790. A mercury warehouse from the period of shipping on the Ljubljanica has also been preserved there. The Mik’lčeva kašča in Verd houses a permanent exhibition featuring photographs of works by Jožef Petkovšek, as well as temporary art exhibitions.

A settlement existed in the wider Vrhnika area by the middle of the 2nd century BC at the latest; in Latinized form, it was called Nauportus. Nauportus was a station on the ancient trade route from Aquileia to Segestika. In the 1st century BC, a Roman part of the settlement developed in the immediate vicinity of Nauportus. Remains of the Roman defensive wall Claustra Alpium Iuliarum are still visible in the Vrhnika area. Between Verd and Zaplana, it was more than 10 km long, approximately 1 m wide and 2 to 3 m high.

The Church of the Holy Trinity was built above Vrhnika around 1640. It contains frescoes by Ogrin and Koželj and was a popular pilgrimage destination in the 18th century.

The Cankar House is a cultural monument in the center of Vrhnika and stands on the site of the wooden house where Ivan Cankar was born. Visitors can see historic interiors and a collection depicting the living conditions of a family on the verge of poverty at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The exhibition also includes first editions of Cankar’s works, photographs, self-portraits and drawings; guided tours are available.

The Časovna postaja Vrhnika features an authentically furnished stationmaster’s office with museum objects. An actual steam locomotive is also displayed there. A virtual reality journey passes through several eras, from the earliest traces of humans in prehistory to the construction of the first section of Slovenian motorway. The Cankar Monument in Vrhnika was ceremonially unveiled on 10 August 1930.

Trails and Activities

The Bog Dwarfs Trail at Mali plac is an easy 3.2 km hiking trail with 96 m of elevation gain and a walking time of approximately 2 hours. It starts at Bevke Sports Park, leads via Kostanjevica to the Mali plac Nature Reserve, and then returns to the sports park. The circular cycling route through the Ljubljana Marshes starts and ends in front of the Vrhnika TIC and is 27 km long.

Po poti Cankarjeve mladosti is a themed trail with 17 stations that tells the story of Ivan Cankar’s life. The Cankar Hike is a 25 km hike held in May, with a moderate difficulty level, connecting Vrhnika with places associated with Cankar. Along the route are refreshment stops offering food and drinks from Vrhnika. The different trail lengths, walking times and difficulty ratings make the options directly comparable.
