Dravograd: Ski Hotel, Lake Dravograd and Culture

Dravograd is a hub where the Drava Cycling Route and Štrekna meet. The Drava Cycling Route runs from the Vič border crossing through the centre of Dravograd, across the bridge to Bukovje and onwards towards Trbonje. Štrekna is a 35-kilometre-long cycle path through the Mislinja Valley and the Huda Luknja Gorge; the route is fully paved and separated from other traffic. In Dravograd, cyclists can also use intermodal transport options, including bus and train connections.

Routes

Several routes provide access to the surrounding area in different ways. The Dravograd–Grad forest educational trail follows a circular route from the town through the forest and past the old castle. It is considered easy and is suitable for a wide range of hikers. The recreational trail Pot za srce leads uphill from the Dravograd Health Centre to the old castle, then descends to the Drava and Lake Dravograd and returns along the bank of the Drava to the health centre.

On the left bank, the Ribniška pot trail passes the Dom koroških ribičev v Dravogradu, the Koroška Fishermen’s Centre at Dravograd. The ruins of Grad Dravograd can be reached from the centre of Dravograd via a footpath and by car via a road. As an immovable local cultural monument, they form part of Dravograd.

Nature

Lake Dravograd is a wetland ecosystem with islands and reed beds. More than 150 species of waterbirds find refuge and breeding grounds there. The Drava near Dravograd is part of a Natura 2000 site. The thematic trails around Lake Dravograd offer opportunities for birdwatching and make the habitat accessible from different perspectives.

The educational trail Bobrčkova učna pot runs around Lake Dravograd and includes seven stations. At these stations, the beaver introduces the plants and animals that live in and around Lake Dravograd. At the end of the educational trail, visitors are invited to the Karawanks Geopark information centre in Bukovje Manor. The exhibitions “Zakladi nemirne reke” and “Dravit – svetovni popotnik iz Dravograda” can be viewed there.

Next to Lake Dravograd, the Fishing Hall houses a natural history collection. It presents the habitats of the Drava, Meža and Mislinja rivers.

Culture

Bukovje Manor in Dravograd is a Baroque manor house. In the manor, the Dravograd Museum presents a permanent exhibition on the Slovenian War of Independence in Koroška in 1991. The rich history of the noble Kometer family is also presented there. Bukovje Manor hosts a wide range of social events; its modern offerings are combined with the manor’s natural setting and cultural heritage.

The Dravograd Museum presents the history of the developing town and its surroundings from the past to modern history. Dravograd is also home to the important Romanesque Church of St Vitus.

The Gestapo Prisons collection is housed in five former prison cells in the basement of the Dravograd municipal building. The Gestapo Prisons exhibition can only be visited by prior appointment; individual visits are not possible.
