Mníšek Nad Popradom between the Border Region and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Mníšek Nad Popradom
Mníšek nad Popradom combines a location on the Slovak-Polish border with marked trails, the valley of the Hraničná stream, and a remarkable religious heritage. Those considering the village as a starting point for a stay will find specific landscape features, historical traces, and two hiking trails with different routes.
Nature
Mníšek nad Popradom lies in the valley of the Hraničná stream. The Poprad River forms the municipality’s border with Poland. The lowest point of Mníšek nad Popradom is located 382 metres above sea level below the church. The Poprad leaves the territory of Slovakia at this point; it is also the lowest point in the district. This precise topographical situation places the village directly on the river and at the state border.
Hiking
The marked hiking trail 2805 runs from Mníšek nad Popradom along the state border to the Sulínka mineral spring. The route is 10.9 kilometres long. A second marked trail bears the number 5881 and leads from Osly via Mníšek nad Popradom to Kače; its length is 11.2 kilometres. The two routes are clearly distinguished by their numbers and their respective courses.
Border Region
A road border crossing connects the municipality with a recreational and spa area in Poland. A connection for cyclists is also planned: the planned EuroVelo 11 route is intended to connect the Mníšek nad Popradom border crossing with the town of Stará Ľubovňa through the Poprad valley. The route is described as a plan and does not refer to an already completed route.
Culture
A surviving written reference from 1323 mentions hermits at this location and uses the expression “locus heremitoris”. Religious life is also associated with the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated in Mníšek nad Popradom on 14 September as a Christian celebration called “odpust”.
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built around 1900. It is a pseudo-Romanesque three-nave pseudo-basilica with Classicist elements. Its side altars contain a painting of Our Lady of the Rosary by Jozef Hanula and a painting of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross by F. Staudinger, a Viennese painter, from 1869. The interior also contains a Baroque-Classicist Calvary sculptural group from the late 18th century.
