Priechod: Accommodation, Nature and Culture

Geographical Setting

Priechod lies in the northern part of the Banská Bystrica Basin on the southern slopes of the western part of the Low Tatras. The Ľupča stream flows through the entire cadastral area of Priechod. North of the village, in the Ľupčica valley, lies the Brvnište protected area, approximately one kilometre from Priechod and on both sides of the stream. The Ľupčica valley has numerous rest areas associated with grilling or roasting food over a fire.

Nature

Brvnište is also characterised by a large and vigorous population of Fatra cyclamen. This population is isolated from the species’ main distribution area in the Great Fatra and in the northeastern part of the Starohorské vrchy mountains. Ivanow’s feather grass (Stipa joannis) and Fumana procumbens also occur in the Kopec protected area. Both species are found only sporadically throughout the territory of Low Tatras National Park and its protected area.

Culture

Among the older buildings in the village is the Chapel of the Archangel Michael, built in 1833 and the oldest historical monument in Priechod. Its altar features a folk wood carving of the Virgin Mary from the 19th century. Another religious building is the Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary. It was consecrated on 19 September 2021 as part of celebrations marking its 50th anniversary. A monastery of the Community of Discalced Carmelites is now located in a parish building dating from 1995.

Local cultural associations also preserve their own traditions. The Priechoďan folk group was founded in 1968 initially as a women’s singing group; men joined shortly afterwards. The group has been active continuously since its foundation and takes part in folk festivals at home and abroad. Traditionally, on the first Sunday in August, Priechod hosts either an annual folk afternoon or a folk festival under the name “Čô sa stauo v tom Priechode”. The folk festival is held at five-year intervals or to mark significant founding anniversaries of the folk group. In addition, Priechod has an active amateur theatre ensemble that stages performances at Christmas and Easter.

Local Life

The history of the village is closely connected with agriculture and sheep farming. In the 20th century, Priechod was an agricultural and pastoral community and one of the most important centres of sheep farming in Slovakia. After the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, women from Priechod sold Oštiepky and Parenica cheeses throughout the country, including as far as Prague and Karlovy Vary. These two cheese specialities therefore form part of a sales tradition extending beyond the village.
