Banský Studenec combines protected landscapes, lakes and evidence of the region’s history. The entire cadastral area of Banský Studenec has belonged to the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area since 1979. Banský Studenec is also one of the municipalities within the Banská Štiavnica Geopark.

Landscape

The Gajdošovo Nature Reserve is located in the cadastral area of Banský Studenec. Its meadow biotopes are home to protected plant species. The Kysihýbel Arboretum is another natural attraction. It is a protected forestry experimental area with stands of fast-growing non-native tree species. A total of 282 tree species were planted in the arboretum, mainly from North America.

The Kysihýbel educational trail begins in Banský Studenec at the western edge of the Kysihýbel Arboretum. The self-guided, circular trail is accessible year-round. The underground Barlangy quarry, also called Diery, is located along the Kysihýbel educational trail. Visits to the Lesnícke arborétum Kysihýbeľ can be arranged with the head of the relevant department of the Forest Research Institute in Zvolen or with the institute’s research station in Banská Štiavnica.

Trails and Bodies of Water

Today, the Kolpašské Lakes are used primarily for fishing, especially the smaller lakes, while the larger lakes mainly serve as destinations for summer recreation. The Kolpašské Lakes are freely accessible to the public. The path between Veľké Kolpašské tajch and Malé Kolpašské tajch has been renewed and illuminated.

The Barborská cesta also provides a connection through the surrounding area: it leads from Svätý Anton to Banský Studenec and the Kolpašské Lake. The Barborská cesta cycle route circles Veľké Kolpašské jazero along the dam in Banský Studenec.

Culture

One of the notable buildings is the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Kostol Premenenia Pána. The Baroque church was built in 1743–1745 and has original Baroque interior furnishings. A wooden bell tower next to the church is a national cultural monument dating from the 1850s. Kolpašské malé jazero is also registered as a national cultural monument.

The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, Kapelle sv. Jána Nepomuckého, was built in Banský Studenec in 1943. Kysihýbel is also home to an aqueduct built around 1870. It was constructed during the building of the narrow-gauge railway from Hronská Breznica to Štiavnica.

Events

The Kolpašská púť takes place in Banský Studenec every year as a cultural, sporting or social event. In addition to the protected landscapes, lakes and historic buildings, recurring public events are therefore also part of the local calendar.
