Štiavnické Bane: Mining History and Water Landscape
Accommodation in Štiavnické Bane
The Piargsky chodník is a 5.3 km educational trail with nine information panels. It presents the area’s most significant mining sites, including shafts and adits, and also explains ore processing. The route therefore highlights an area where mining and the technical development of the landscape can be seen together.

Culture
The Church of St. Joseph, together with its associated monastery complex at Vindšachta, is also part of Štiavnické Bane’s historical character. Both were built between 1735 and 1754. The church is a single-nave Baroque building with an attached tower; a two-storey monastery building adjoins it on the northern side. Its furnishings include an organ built in 1754. It was probably made by the renowned organ builder Martin Podkonický.
The Štiavnické Bane heritage conservation area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Town of Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity.” This World Heritage Site also includes the Banská Štiavnica heritage conservation area and the protected historic zone of Hodruša-Hámre. All or part of the municipal territory of Štiavnické Bane belongs to the core zone of the Banská Štiavnica Geopark.
Water
Another educational trail focuses on the Piargsky vodohospodársky systém. At 16 stations, it explains the uniqueness of the mining water-management system in one part of the Piarg group of water reservoirs. The Piarg water-management educational trail has two variants: the long route measures 15,110 m and has an elevation difference of 100 m, while the short variant is 10,350 m long and includes an elevation difference of 85 m.
The Veľká Windšachtská water reservoir was built between 1712 and 1715 and is one of the first four water reservoirs in the area of present-day Štiavnické Bane. The reservoir is currently used for recreational purposes and is an inseparable part of the unique Banská Štiavnica water-management system. On site, this system has been preserved in an authentic form and in its original extent, with only minor local impairments or damage.
Nature
The Ökológia piargskych tajchov educational trail has five stations. It focuses on the biological life and related water quality of selected water reservoirs. The trail begins at the main dam of the Veľká Richňava water reservoir and can be completed on foot in two to three hours.
Pilgrimage
Another historic route is the Kalvarie Štiavnické Bane–Horná Roveň. It has six stations dating from 1754 and leads to a Calvary group dating from 1730.
