Landscape and Trails
The Circuitul Tăurilor is an easy, marked hiking trail that begins in the central square of Roșia Montană. The themed trail “Natura în culori” is located in the Scărița-Belioara nature reserve on the Șesul Craiului limestone plateau.
The Scărița-Belioara themed trail can be reached via Muntele-Băișoara, Poșaga, or Ocoliș. The Ghețarul de la Vârtop cave is a karst cave in the Apuseni Mountains with an underground glacier that exists year-round and galleries more than 300 meters long. From Casa de Piatră in the commune of Arieşeni in Alba County, it can be reached on foot in approximately 30–40 minutes.
Culture and History
The various adits of the Roșia Montană Roman gold-mining complex are 7 kilometers long in total. The mining landscape of Roșia Montană lies within an agro-pastoral landscape that largely reflects the structures of the communities that supported mining between the 18th and early 20th centuries. The Tăuri of Roșia Montană are artificial lakes created for gold mining.
Râmeț Monastery is one of the oldest monastic settlements in Transylvania. The third layer of frescoes inside the monastery was painted in 1377 by Mihu from Crișul Alb.
On December 1, 1918, the 1,228 delegates of the Great National Assembly gathered in Sala Unirii in Alba Iulia and voted for the union of Transylvania with Romania. Visitors to Sala Unirii can see the delegates’ identification cards, flags, medals, the camera used on December 1, 1918, and other artifacts related to the union.
Nature
Hiking, climbing, photography, and picnicking are possible in the Cheile Ampoiței.
