Culture and History

Castelul Corvinilor is considered the most significant monument of 15th-century military architecture in Eastern Europe. Its expansion between 1440 and 1446 created a new curtain wall flanked by seven predominantly round defensive towers. Since January 1, 2021, the entire complex has been open to visitors.

If you would like to book a hotel in Eisenmarkt, you can make your accommodation decision separately from selecting the individual cultural and natural attractions.

The Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains comprise six defensive structures built under Dacian rule in the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. They feature extensive, well-preserved remains in a spectacular natural setting. UNESCO inscribed them under criteria (ii), (iii), and (iv); they combine military architecture techniques and are outstanding examples of fortified sites from the European Late Iron Age.

Magna Curia, also known as Bethlen Castle, is listed in Romania's List of Historical Monuments as a Category A monument (HD-II-m-A-03225).

The Dacian defense system around Sarmizegetusa Regia extended across approximately 150 km² and was intended to protect the power center of the Dacian kingdom. Archaeological investigations identified defensive towers in the retaining walls of the terraces in the sacred area, including a distinctive pentagonal tower on the outer wall of Terrace XI.

Landscape and Geopark

Cetatea Deva stands on a volcanic cone at an elevation of 378 meters and overlooks the Mureș Valley. It can be reached via signposted footpaths or by funicular. Local buses in Deva serve stops near the entrance, including routes 2, 6, and 7.

In the UNESCO Global Geopark Țara Hațegului, the “Dinosaur Valley” trail runs from the House of Dwarf Dinosaurs to the “La Scoaba” geosite, where the first dinosaur fossils in the geopark were discovered. The “Volcano Road” trail begins in the center of the village of Densuș and leads to the volcanic hills and the House of Volcanoes; well-preserved pillow lava outcrops can be seen along the way. The geopark is also home to extremely rare fossils of dwarf reptiles representing more than ten dinosaur species.

Activities in the Wider Area

Twelve cycling routes have been established in Țara Hațegului, two of which pass through Retezat National Park. The park has designated climbing routes on the Pereții Bucurii and Colții Pelegii. They have varying levels of difficulty and may only be undertaken with appropriate equipment.

The summer program at Straja Resort includes, among other things, hikes in Retezatul Mic, rafting on the Jiu, paintball, and off-road tours.

Most of the information along the thematic trail is available bilingually in Romanian and English.
