Arieșeni is a destination for skiing and seasonal sports in winter. The Pârtia Vârtop I ski slope is 1,000 meters long and equipped with a drag lift and night lighting. Ski and snowboard equipment can be rented at the bottom station of Pârtia Vârtop II. Pârtia Vârtop II is considered a ski slope for beginners, with ski and snowboard instructors. This provides different features for comparing the two slopes: for Pârtia Vârtop I, the length, lift and lighting are specified, while Pârtia Vârtop II is characterized by its classification, instructors and rental service.

For a stay in Arieșeni, accommodation offers can be considered in terms of different details, such as travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions.

Nature and Trails

The marked route to Cascada Vârciorog leads from the center of Arieșeni via the DN75 toward Vârtop, followed by three kilometers along the Vârciorog Valley on a trail marked with a yellow dot. Cascada Pătrăhăițești is a 14-meter-high waterfall with two drops. Cascada Vârciorog is more than 15 meters high and lies in a coniferous forest at the foot of the Piatra Grăitoare peak in Arieșeni.

Near Cascada Pătrăhăițești, there are two mini-museums that function as craft workshops and produce traditional wooden items such as Tulnic trumpets, wooden vessels, bowls, wooden cups, salt containers and flutes. The Vârful Curcubata Mică peak is 1,769 meters high and offers a panorama of Arieșul Mare and Arieșul Mic. For natural attractions, the information ranges from a marked valley trail and waterfalls to a peak, caves and an underground watercourse. The different forms and scales can be taken into account separately when planning your own day.

Culture

The Biserica „Înălțarea Domnului” Arieșeni was built entirely of wood between 1791 and 1829 in the style of the churches of Maramureș. It is classified as a historic monument and is part of Romania’s national cultural heritage. The Muzeul Pătrăhăiștești in the village of Pătrăhăiștești, in the commune of Arieșeni, displays several objects typical of Țara Moților.

Caves and Geology

The Peștera Ghețarul Vârtop is also known as Peștera Minunată because of its numerous white limestone formations and is a natural monument. The Peștera Coiba Mare has the largest cave entrance in Romania. From Arieșeni, the route to Peștera Coiba Mare follows the DN75 to Gârda de Sus and then continues for approximately 12 kilometers on a local road to the village of Casa de Piatră; there, a sign marks the descent to the cave.

At Izbucul Tauzului, water emerges at the surface after entering the underground through the Coiba Mare and Coiba Mică caves; with a maximum depth of 85 meters, Izbucul Tauz is considered Romania’s deepest known siphon.
