Krødsherad: Norefjell winter activities and hiking destinations
Accommodation in Krødsherad
Winter activities and hiking destinations are the focus at Norefjell; at Krøderfjorden, fishing, swimming, boating and seasonal cruises are specific options. Check the location of your accommodation against the places you want to visit and the activities you have planned.
Krødsherad by Krøderen and Krøderfjorden
Krødsherad surrounds the southern part of Lake Krøderen and has a shoreline along Krøderen. Krøderfjorden is 41 km long and offers opportunities for fishing, swimming and boating. There are several designated swimming areas in Krødsherad. The boat ramps are also useful points of reference when planning a boating trip: In Noresund, on Bjørøya below the parking area at Villa Fridheim, there is a public boat ramp providing access to the fjord. Another public boat ramp is located in the centre of Krøderen.
The MS Kryllingen II offers seasonal cruises on Krøderfjorden. Themed cruises include, among other things, shrimp, wine, knitting and war history; the programme may change. If you are planning a particular cruise, check the current seasonal programme in advance.
Winter activities at Norefjell
Norefjell has two snow parks and three children’s areas. One of the snow parks is in Bøseter; the central Norefjellparken offers runs for all skill levels. This information about skill levels refers to the runs in the central park. Facilities may change over time, so it is a good idea to check the current offer before your trip.
Cross-country skiing is also an option at Norefjell when there is enough snow: trails can then start directly at Norefjellstua and Norefjell Ski & Spa. There are several shelters along the cross-country trails. As infrastructure may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before making plans.
Hiking destinations and navigation
The local hiking programme includes 22 hiking destinations with guestbook boxes. The trails in Krødsherad are marked in blue; many are also GPS-marked and listed on UT.no. The municipal hiking information was last updated in 2025. This provides both a local programme and digital points of reference for planning.
Høgevarde is located in Norefjell and, at 1,459 m, is the highest point in Krødsherad. The summit is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Norefjell. On clear days, it offers one of the finest views in Eastern Norway; the view stretches to Jotunheimen, Hardangerjøkulen and Gaustatoppen. Another specific point of reference is the hike to Kleivavarden: its starting point is Krødsheradhallen.
Culture and railway history
Villa Fridheim is a well-preserved Swiss-style villa and a fairy-tale museum. Fairy tales, storytelling and intangible cultural heritage are at its heart; the museum focuses especially on the life’s work of Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe. Villa Fridheim offers exhibitions, concerts and events. The programme may change.
Krøderen Station is protected as a technical cultural monument. Krøderbanen ceased operating as an NSB railway in 1985 and has since been run as a heritage railway by Norsk Jernbaneklubb and Stiftelsen Krøderbanen. The goods shed at the station houses the exhibition “For full damp”. As visitor facilities may change, check whether the exhibition is currently open to visitors before your visit.
Choose accommodation based on your travel plans
When looking for accommodation for a ski holiday, it helps to prioritise the activities you have planned: winter activities at Norefjell, cross-country skiing when snow conditions are sufficient, hiking destinations such as Høgevarde, or excursions around Krøderfjorden each offer a different focus.
