In Sigdal, the experiences described range from cultural history and artists’ homes to hiking, water activities and local food. As you plan, consider which of these themes you would like to focus on during your stay: the offerings include both individual cultural sites and specific trails and activities in nature.

Museums, Artists’ Homes and History

Founded in 1940, the Sigdal Museum is an open-air and cultural history museum in Prestfoss. The museum is also home to Folkemusikksenteret i Buskerud, a centre of expertise for folk music and folk dancing. The museum grounds are accessible regardless of whether the museum itself is open. The museum is open year-round by appointment—a key distinction if you are planning a visit inside.

Lauvlia was the home of the artist Theodor Kittelsen and opened as a museum in 1995. It offers activities specially designed for children, including a children’s trail, painting at an easel and boat-building. Lauvlia also serves Sigdalskling, freshly baked waffles with sour cream and homemade raspberry jam, as well as traditional coffee treats such as Bringebærsnipp. A visit combines a glimpse into the artist’s former home with the activities and food on offer there.

Hagan is one of Norway’s best-preserved artists’ homes from the Golden Age of Norwegian painting. The painter Christian Skredsvig lived there for 30 years. Another place where history can be explored through a range of buildings is Eggedal Mølle: the site includes, among other things, an old sawmill, a watermill, a schoolhouse, a storehouse and a brewhouse. Eggedal Mølle opened as a museum in 1997 and tells the story of hydropower and forestry in Buskerud.

Hiking Trails and Nature Experiences

Målargutua is an approximately 10 km hiking trail between Kittelsen’s former home at Sole (1896–1899) and Skredsvig’s former home, Hagan (1894–1924); the trail passes via Eggedal Mølle. Information boards, rest spots and picnic areas are located along the route. Its length and stops make it possible to plan this trail as a day outing in its own right, without implying a specific walking time.

The circular trail around Haglebuvannet passes through old spruce forest and marshland to barbecue areas and a permanent shelter by the water. It is considered suitable for jogging, cycling, strollers and wheelchairs; there are also accessible fishing spots. At Haglebu Feriesenter, you can rent canoes and boats for Haglebuvannet and buy fishing licences for the lake. This outing therefore centres on both a circular trail and opportunities by the water.

Trillemarka has a varied natural landscape and lies partly in Sigdal and partly in Numedal. Grøset Seter is in Sigdal, near Andersnatten, and serves as a starting point for a hike in the Trillemarka nature reserve. There are cycling routes in the wider Trillemarka area for different ability levels, including families with children. These routes are described as being in the wider area and should therefore not be confused with a trail directly by Grøset.

Water Activities and Local Food

Sigdal Aktiv offers rafting for individuals, groups and companies. Participants receive an introduction to paddling technique, steering their own raft as a team, river swimming and self-rescue. Another water activity is the SUP tour offered by Sigdal Aktiv: it follows the Eggedøla river downstream and into the Solevatn nature reserve. The two offerings therefore differ in the activities and routes described.

Seasonal offerings also play a part at Grøset seter: in summer, Rømmegrøt and Sveler are served, and visitors can see various farm animals. Those considering a stay in Sigdal can choose among cultural sites, nature experiences and these summer offerings to set different priorities for their trip. You can also visit Eggedal for an overview of the area. More destinations to compare: Lier Municipality, Krødsherad, Nore Og Uvdal, Hol Municipality, Nes and Kongsberg Municipality.
