The approximately 12-kilometre Ustedalsfjorden Rundt combines a hiking trail with a cross-country ski trail, providing a concrete reference point for planning a winter trip to Hol. Surface conditions and seasonal conditions may vary. When looking for accommodation in Hol, it helps to first decide on the main focus of your trip: a route, cultural history or activities in Dagali.

Routes and Getting There

Hol is most commonly reached by train from Oslo or Bergen, or by bus or car. If you are travelling by public transport, check the timetables separately. Haugastøl station in Hol Municipality is one starting point for the Rallarvegen; the route sees heavy bicycle traffic in summer.

The Rallarvegen cycle route is 82 kilometres long in total. From Haugastøl, it follows the Bergen Railway via Finse, Hallingskeid and Myrdal to Flåm. This makes it clearly distinct from the shorter Ustedalsfjorden Rundt, which combines hiking and skiing. Check seasonal route conditions before planning a trip.

Local Cultural History

The old Hol Church dates from the 13th century and is the oldest church in the municipality. Fekjo Cultural Heritage Park features landscape art by Gunnveig Nerol and Terje Isungset, as well as burial mounds from the Viking Age dating back to the 9th century. Most of the graves that have been examined were women’s graves. The park also includes seven charcoal kilns and an iron production site. Art, burial sites and traces of iron production offer different ways to explore cultural history here.

Dagali Museum and Summer Events

Dagali Museum displays buildings and objects from Dagali, Skurdalen, Tunhovd and Uvdal. The site is laid out like an old farmstead and includes various buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. This brings historical objects and buildings together in one ensemble.

Every summer, the museum holds art exhibitions by renowned artists in the Kjønås-stabburet. The museum day during Dagali Days in mid-July is a tradition. It includes an outdoor church service, refreshments, open houses and various activities. Exact dates and the programme may vary; check these details if you are planning your visit around them.

Activities with Different Conditions

Rafting in Dagali includes family-friendly trips for children aged eight and up, as well as more challenging options. Check the age requirements and information from individual providers before booking. This helps you assess the experience more specifically without treating the different trips as equally demanding.

At Slåttahølen, there is a fishing platform adapted for people with disabilities at one of the waterway’s best fishing spots. Check the condition of the platform on site. In Geilo, the Flow-Motion Trail runs down a four-kilometre descent from Bjødnahovda, at the lift’s upper station in Vestlia, to the SkiGeilo Activity Park. Trail conditions and operating arrangements may vary; current information is useful for planning.
