Eschen offers a combination of historic buildings, signposted trails, regional culture and a wide range of sports activities. What is particularly interesting is the opportunity to tailor your stay to different interests: you can visit sites of cultural and historical significance, explore circular trails on foot, take a virtual tour or include destinations in the surrounding area. Culture and History in Eschen

One of the most distinctive buildings is the neo-Gothic parish church of St. Martin, built in 1893/94. The Eschen Mill represents a different historical focus. The building dates from 1778 and served for decades as a manorial wine press. The upper floor displays equipment and objects relating to the theme of “nutrition”. If you would like to learn about history not only through buildings but also through their former use, these two places can be viewed as two different stops.

Nendeln also has a multi-layered sacred history. The present-day Sebastian Chapel was built at its current location in 1935. The former Chapel of St. Sebastian and Rochus, on the other hand, was endowed in 1639, built in 1686 and demolished in 1936. Nendeln is also home to Keramik Werkstatt Schaedler AG, the oldest arts and crafts business in Liechtenstein. The spectrum thus ranges from ecclesiastical architectural history to a long-established arts and crafts business.

Circular Trails, the High-Level Trail and Pilgrimage Tradition

The cultural trail through Nendeln begins at the primary school. This starting point is about a ten-minute walk from the Sebastianstrasse bus stop. For planning your day, the two cultural trails therefore already differ in their starting points: in Eschen, you begin directly at the Pfrund buildings, while in Nendeln the route starts at the primary school and involves a short walk from the bus stop.

For longer walks on the Eschnerberg, the Historical High-Level Trail is a distinct point of reference. It has existed since 1975 and comprises various circular trails as well as 45 information boards. The fourth stage of the Liechtenstein Trail passes the Rofenberg Chapel and follows part of the Historical High-Level Trail. The Rofenberg Chapel is located at a crossroads of three paths. These include the old pilgrimage route taken by people from Vorarlberg to Einsiedeln and Santiago de Compostela. Depending on your interests, you can therefore distinguish between a cultural and historical route, circular trails and a path with a traditional pilgrimage connection.

Events and Sports Activities

The local events calendar includes the traditional Bretschalauf, which takes place every April in Eschen village square. The event is therefore tied to a specific month and complements the permanently existing buildings and trails with a recurring occasion. If you are travelling with children or in a group with different interests, the Eschen-Mauren Sports Park also offers a wide selection of documented sports: football, athletics, hockey, rugby, archery and target shooting are represented there. More Destinations in the Surrounding Area

There are also several different destinations beyond the immediate cultural trails. The Postal Museum is located in the area around Eschen. Ober Burg Ruins are located in the vicinity of Eschen. Buchs Bird of Prey Park is a zoo in the area around Eschen. Each of these three destinations has its own focus: stamps, historic structures and observing animals.

For regional context, it is also important that Eschen-Nendeln in Liechtenstein’s Lower Country is associated with historic buildings and viticulture. The cultural impression is therefore not limited to individual churches or circular trails, but also includes the character of the region. With its exhibition on the upper floor, the Eschen Mill additionally addresses the theme of nutrition. Guided tours of the Eschen Mill are offered by prior arrangement.
