Landscape and Trails
The Eremo di San Giorgio lies at an altitude of 460 metres on a rock and on a ridge that forms a natural barrier on the left bank of the Canale di Brenta. The Eremo di San Giorgio has been documented since 1571. From the town of Solagna, the Eremo di San Giorgio can only be reached on foot, via a well-maintained trail, in about 30 minutes. In Italian, “Eremo” refers to a hermitage or secluded religious site.
The CAI 944 Trail begins in Località Mattecci and leads to the Eremo di San Giorgio and the Cresta di San Giorgio. In Italian, sentiero means trail; the designation CAI refers to the Club Alpino Italiano. The Cresta di San Giorgio refers to a mountain ridge. The Sentiero del Torrion descends through the forest to Località Bresagge and passes the Croce del Torrion on a rocky outcrop overlooking Solagna. Trail 940 connects Campo Solagna and Finestron; the connection runs between Solagna and San Nazario. The RV 9 – Brenta Veneto route also runs through the municipality of Solagna along the road to Campese.
Church and Sacred History
The Chiesa di Santa Giustina is considered the oldest church known in the Canale di Brenta and dates back to the area’s early Christianization. The Chiesa di Santa Giustina was rebuilt around 1850. The Chiesa di Santa Giustina contains a depiction of Saint Justina by Francesco da Ponte il Vecchio.
Craftsmanship and Historical Uses
The Filanda Secco was built in 1852 as a silk-spinning mill. A silk-spinning mill is a facility for processing silk. In 1895, the Filanda Secco was converted into a tobacco warehouse and storage facility. In the 20th century, Solagna had two active lime kilns.
The restored second lime kiln of La Calcara di Solagna lies near the ruins of the Torre di Solagna and includes an artificial cave that served as a powder magazine for the quarry. A lime kiln is a facility where lime is fired. The Ezzelini built the Bastia on the 350-metre-high summit of the Bastia.
