Villa Collemandina: Nature, Trails and Local Culture

Nature at the Foot of Pania di Corfino

Villa Collemandina lies at the foot of the Pania di Corfino massif. Beech and coniferous forests give way at higher elevations to the summit meadows of the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park. The Giardino Botanico “Maria Ansaldi” is located at a notable elevation: it lies in the municipality of Villa Collemandina at an altitude of 1,370 metres, in a clearing within a beech forest in the Parco Naturale dell’Orecchiella. The botanical garden has numerous short paths leading through different areas with various aspects of the plant landscape of the Apennine Garfagnana.

In the forests of the Parco dell’Orecchiella, you can find Apennine wolves, deer, mouflon and golden eagles, among other species. The same park also offers pleasant walks. For those interested in nature, the forest, summit meadows and wildlife of the Parco dell’Orecchiella are the main attractions. The nature experience therefore extends from the botanical garden’s wooded high-altitude setting to wildlife observation and walking trails in the Parco dell’Orecchiella, without connecting the individual destinations into a single route.

Trails and Individual Nature Destinations

From Corfino, the Pania di Corfino State Nature Reserve can be reached on foot via CAI trails nos. 56 and 58. The “Airone 1” trail also leads from Corfino to the Pania di Corfino Nature Reserve, forms a complete loop around the Pania massif and climbs to the main summit. For planning a day trip, the ascent to the main summit can be treated as a separate section of the route.

The “Scaloni e Monte Vecchio” route also passes through the municipality of Villa Collemandina. Another independent destination is Tana di Magnano: its entrance is next to the road and is easily accessible. The entrance beside the road provides a clear spatial reference point. With its short paths, the Giardino Botanico “Maria Ansaldi” offers a different form of exploration from the trails from Corfino.

Culture and Local History

In the Santuario della Madonna del Perpetuo Soccorso in Corfino, there is a 16th-century plaque depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child. The Madonna di Caravaggio church in Pianacci dates from the 19th century.

Near Sassorosso, discoveries have been made indicating human presence since prehistoric times. Sassorosso is also associated with the extraction of high-quality red marble, known there as saxo rubeo. This marble gives the landscape and the village’s buildings a distinctive colouring.

Local Cuisine and Events

In Corfino, traditional dishes from peasant cuisine are presented during the “Un passo nel passato” food tour at Ferragosto. Ferragosto marks the time frame for the tour.

The Sagra della Trota is a culinary event in Villa Collemandina. Below the Villa Collemandina reservoir, the stream is suitable for picnics and sport fishing. The lake itself is currently empty due to extraordinary maintenance work on the dam.
