Gallicano between the Mountains and Garfagnana

Gallicano lies at the foot of Monte Pania, amid very green, wooded valleys. The area where Gallicano is located has been a borderland since the Middle Ages. Gallicano and its outlying villages include typical Garfagnana settlements that have remained almost unchanged. Here, mountain landscapes and traditional settlement patterns meet a locally distinctive culture, reflected in architecture, crafts and festivals.

Historic Buildings and Art

Gallicano’s Palazzo Comunale served in the Middle Ages as a guardhouse protecting the entrance to the castle. Beneath its loggia is a polychrome terracotta tondo of the Madonna and Child. The work is attributed to the Della Robbia school and dates from the end of the 15th century. The Palazzo Comunale can be reached on foot from either of Gallicano’s two car parks; the car parks are about 100 metres from the building.

The Arco di Francesco V is a small structure built of stone and brick. The Arco di Francesco V is also a canal bridge with tall Gothic pointed arches, designed to help solve the problem of drought during certain seasons. The Church of San Pietro in Trassilico houses a painting made by Simone Carretta in the 16th century.

Festivals and Christmas Traditions

The Palio di San Jacopo was officially inaugurated in 1972. That year saw the first actual competition between the town districts, featuring allegorical floats. The Palio di San Jacopo takes place on 25 July, the feast day of Gallicano’s patron saint, as well as on the preceding Saturday. The Fiaccolata Natalizia is an annual torchlight procession in Gallicano, attracting thousands of people from throughout Tuscany every year. The Fiaccolata Natalizia began in 1980 as a fundraising event for people in need and cancer research.

Gallicano’s Christmas folklore includes the “Sacra rappresentazione e strage degli innocenti”, a form of popular theatre combining the sacred and the secular. During the “Befanata di questua” in Gallicano, people sing at residents’ front doors to receive gifts.

Focaccia leva and Trails through the Landscape

Focaccia leva is a product made exclusively in Gallicano. The “Festa della focaccia leva” takes place every year on the Sunday after Ferragosto in Gallicano’s historic centre. The car and motorcycle tour from Gallicano to the Grotta del Vento runs along the Turrite stream.

The “Chieva” trail offers views of Pania della Croce and Monte Forato. During the circular hike “Anello dell’Eremo”, scheduled for 12 October 2025, a route of approximately 12 km led between Gallicano and the Eremo di Calomini via Crocette, Panicaglia and Calomini.
