Stenico: Discover the Castle, Nature and Trails

Cultural history in Stenico

The historic village of Stenico features traditional homes, elegant palazzi and numerous fountains in its squares. The first documented mention of a “castrum” on the hill of Stenico dates back to 1163; it probably referred to a group of fortifications protecting the surrounding villages. Stenico Castle has been part of the Castello del Buonconsiglio Museum since 1973.

The educational programs of Castello del Buonconsiglio at Stenico Castle include interactive trails and brain-teasing activities. The Calferi necropolis reveals Stenico’s origins. The necropolis dates back to the Bronze Age and contains numerous fragments of ancient pottery.

Nature and landscape

The Cascata del Rio Bianco is an unusual karst waterfall that suddenly emerges from the rock and is part of a spring system fed by the snowmelt of the Brenta Dolomites. The waterfall can be reached via a short uphill walk within the Rio Bianco Nature Area in Adamello Brenta Nature Park.

Casa del Parco Flora is the visitor center for the Rio Bianco Nature Area in Adamello Brenta Nature Park. Casa del Parco Flora presents the park’s vegetation indoors and along an outdoor educational trail; the outdoor trail explains the plant communities and the various parts of plants. The educational offerings of Casa del Parco Flora and the park include an outdoor trail that passes the roaring waterfalls of the Rio Bianco and crosses a stream gorge.

The Arca di Fraporte is a natural arch in Val Laone, formed by karst and stream processes. Within the municipality of Stenico, the Arca di Fraporte is a geosite recognized by Adamello Brenta Nature Park.

Val d'Algone lies partly within Stenico in Adamello Brenta Nature Park, between the Ponte Pià gorge and Passo del Gotro. The discovery trail through Val Algone passes the remains of a disused quartz quarry. Near Rifugio Ghedina, the ruins of a glass factory bear witness to the glass industry that flourished in the valley between 1800 and 1880.

Trails and themed routes

The Percorso Valle dei Mulini - Stenico is a hiking trail that begins in Stenico. The Percorso Valle dei Mulini leads from Stenico’s piazza along an old mule track to the Sarca River at the entrance to the Forra della Scaletta. Along the Percorso Valle dei Mulini, visitors can see the ruins of old mills and manufactories, as well as facilities that are still operating to generate electricity.

BoscoArteStenico is an art walk through nature. Traditional wooden sculptures and avant-garde installations line the trail. BoscoArteStenico also includes the Sentiero dei piccoli Camminatori children’s trail with downloadable multimedia material.

The Stenico Tour circular route passes through meadows, forests and agricultural land before returning to its starting point in Stenico.

Getting there and parking

Bus route 208 connects Ponte Arche and Stenico. Parking is available just outside Stenico near the Rio Bianco waterfall or at the entrance to BoscoArteStenico.
