Mattarello: Culture, Aviation and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Mattarello
Culture and Historic Buildings
The Castello di Mattarello is also known as Torre Franca. It was built near the village of Mattarello to control a road. This road led from the Adige Valley via Vigolo Vattaro to Valsugana. Torre Franca refers to the same complex as the Castello di Mattarello and not to another building. The reference to Mattarello and the route via Vigolo Vattaro connect the complex with a specific road between the Adige Valley and Valsugana. Its control function was therefore tied to a clearly defined transport route.

Aviation in the Airport Area
The Museo dell’aeronautica Gianni Caproni is located in the airport area of Mattarello. The museum displays a collection of original historic aircraft of worldwide significance. Its exhibition hall houses around twenty historic aircraft, including nine unique examples found nowhere else in the world. The nine unique examples are part of this collection and are displayed together with the other historic aircraft in the exhibition hall. Original historic aircraft therefore form the specific focus of the collection.
Fortifications and Their Forms
The Batteria Superiore Mattarello is located at an altitude of 350 metres on the Doss Ròcol, in the cadastral area of Mattarello. In the village of Zampetta, the Forte Mattarello was built to protect two important road connections. The fort is a square building with three levels: two are above ground and one is underground. A ditch and a stone wall surround the building. The wall is equipped with a loophole for riflemen. For the Batteria, the elevation is linked to its location on the Doss Ròcol; for the Forte, the floor plan, levels and outer enclosure are additional features. Its protective function is directed at two important road connections.
Church, Villa and Garden
The first documentary records of the Chiesa di San Leonardo in Mattarello date from 1339. Another historical point of reference is the Villa Bortolazzi all’Acquaviva. It is one of the most significant historic and artistic buildings in Trentino. The villa’s extensive Italian garden is surrounded by statues and features a swimming pool integrated into the grounds. The villa thus represents a building whose garden is described as having statues and a water feature incorporated into the grounds.
Panorama and Cultural Trail
The route La Conca delle Novaline tra vigneti e ville storiche between vineyards and historic villas offers a panorama as a special attraction. The Parco di Mattarello also has a cultural trail featuring works by Alberto Blasi. The route’s connection with the landscape remains associated with vineyards, historic villas and a panorama, while the park trail incorporates Alberto Blasi’s works. For planning a day, the route and park can be considered separate themes: the route represents the landscape view, while the cultural trail represents works of art in the Parco di Mattarello.
