Olang: Walking Paths, Dolomite Panorama and Culture

Olang between the nature park and UNESCO World Heritage Site

Olang is located in the heart of Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park. Olang lies among farm gardens and the panorama of the Dolomites and is situated in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. At Floriani Square in Mitterolang, there is a drinking-water fountain that is freely and free of charge accessible.

Walking paths with different focuses

The Stone Mile in Olang is a varied themed and walking trail with informative stations. A themed trail is dedicated to a particular subject, while a walking trail focuses on walking along a route. The Stone Mile is mostly flat or has only gentle inclines. Wide, easily walkable sections are suitable for prams and wheelchairs. Olang also has pleasant panoramic paths in the village. Panoramic paths direct the view towards the landscape. Guided alpine pasture tours are also offered in Olang. A guided alpine pasture tour takes place with an accompanying guide.

Family-friendly path and playground

The family-friendly walking path from Niederolang to Mitterolang leads through Mühlbach, is suitable for prams and has a playground along the way. The public children's playground in Mitterolang offers slides, seesaws and opportunities to build sandcastles.

Cycle route through Mitterolang and the Antholz Valley

The 105 km-long Puster Valley Cycle Path runs through Mitterolang. The kilometre figure refers to the length of the entire cycle path. The tour “From Olang to Staller Sattel” begins in the centre of Mitterolang and leads through the entire Antholz Valley, past villages, meadows and forests to Antholz Lake.

Monuments, sawmill and festival tradition

The Peter Sigmayr Monument stands in the centre of Mitterolang and commemorates the Olang hero of 1809/10. A monument preserves the memory of a historical person or event and makes this connection to the location immediately visible.

In the surroundings of Valdaora di Mezzo, the Lipper Sawmill is located in Oberolang, an easily accessible Venetian sawmill dating from the 19th century. A Venetian sawmill is part of historical woodworking. The Lipper Sawmill was last operated in 1958, restored in 2011 and put back into operation. The Lipper Sawmill is considered the last surviving Venetian sawmill and a unique testament to the history of woodworking in the Puster Valley.

The traditional festival in Valdaora di Mezzo takes place on the weekend after the Feast of Saint Giles and usually falls on the first weekend of September. Saint Giles is invoked by shepherds and hunters and venerated as the patron saint of livestock and against the plague.

Piz da Peres as a more challenging hiking destination

Among the more challenging hiking destinations in Olang is the striking Dolomite peak of Piz da Peres. A Dolomite peak refers to a mountain summit in the characteristic mountain region of the Dolomites.
