Landscape Between Mountain Massifs
Corvara lies in a broad hollow between the Sassongher and Sella massif on one side and the high plateau of Pralongià on the other. A hollow is a lower-lying area of landscape; a high plateau is an elevated, comparatively open area. The Puez-Odle Nature Park extends across the municipalities of Corvara and Badia in Alta Badia, San Martino in Badia, Funes, Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva di Val Gardena in Val Gardena, covering a total of 10,722 hectares.

Historical Traces and Sacred Art
Corvara was first mentioned in 1296 in a document by Girardo di Coruera. The Chiesa di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria is Corvara’s first church; it was mentioned in 1347 and consecrated in 1452.
The Chiesa di Santa Caterina was built in the Late Gothic style. Its winged altarpiece from 1520 is the only winged altarpiece in the churches of Val Badia that is still well preserved. A winged altarpiece is an altar image with movable side panels; the year 1520 marks the historical date of the work.
Winter and the History of Winter Sports
Corvara gave rise to the first ski school in Alta Badia in the 1930s. The Alta Badia ski area has 130 km of perfectly groomed ski slopes. Groomed slopes are descents that have been smoothed and prepared for skiing.
The history of winter sports also includes the Col-Alto toboggan run: it was built in 1938 and replaced in 1947 by Italy’s first chairlift. A chairlift is an uphill transport system in which passengers are carried uphill on seats.
Hiking and Mountain Biking
The high-altitude hike at the foot of the Sella Group begins in Corvara and runs along the eastern side of the Sella Group. It has only slight elevation changes and is not technically difficult. Slight elevation changes describe the route’s vertical profile; technical difficulty refers to the demands of the trail. The starting point of the hike, or the relevant place of interest, is accessible by public transport.
There is also a documented route connection for mountain bike fans: the Sellaronda MTB Tour passes through Corvara. The entire Sellaronda MTB Tour can be completed in one day thanks to the use of uphill transport systems for the steeper climbs. MTB stands for mountain bike, meaning a bicycle suitable for off-road terrain. This makes it possible to plan the entire tour as an activity with a clear one-day timeframe.
Art Inspired by the Ladin Landscape
In Raimond Mussner’s workshop, a permanent exhibition displays watercolours and bronze sculptures dedicated to the landscape of the Ladin valleys. Watercolours use water-soluble paints, while bronze sculptures are three-dimensional works made of metal. The exhibition combines both forms of expression in one space.
