Gais Cultural Trail: Art and Views
Along the Gais Cultural Trail, works of art pay tribute to the minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein, the American poet Ezra Pound, his daughter Mary de Rachewiltz and the Bacher artists. The Gais Cultural Trail is a themed hiking trail that begins at the entrance to the village of Gais near the Gasthof Sonne, leads through the forest and continues to Neuhaus Castle.
The Gais Cultural Trail is 2 kilometres long in total. At several points, it offers views of the unique Gais debris cone and the village with its Romanesque church. The imposing ruins of Kehlburg Castle lie on the opposite hill and can be seen from several points along the Cultural Trail.
For a day plan in Gais, the Cultural Trail can be included as a separate section of the route. The entrance to the village, the forest and Neuhaus Castle form the sequence of the trail. Its length of 2 kilometres can be included in the itinerary as a specific distance.
Kehlburg Castle and Uttenheimer Schlössl
Kehlburg Castle was probably built at the beginning of the 12th century. After a fire in 1944, Kehlburg Castle has been increasingly falling into decay.
The ruins of Uttenheimer Schlössl are located in Uttenheim on a steeply sloping rocky ridge and belong to the municipality of Gais. The castle has been left to decay since the 17th century. Today, it consists of the surrounding wall, the largely collapsed three-storey palas, the Chapel of St Valentine and the keep.
Waalweg and Maurachweg in Gais
The Waalweg in Gais begins at the parish church and crosses the Ahr Bridge. It then runs between the houses in a north-easterly direction to the forest. From the Ahr Bridge, the walking time is approximately 20 minutes.
The approximate walking time from the Ahr Bridge can be used as a separate time frame for this section of the Waalweg. This keeps the section between the bridge and the forest clear even in a structured day plan.
The Maurachweg passes the so-called “Mount of Olives”, which is characterised by a painting by Hartmann Polt.
Swimming Lake and Cycle Path in Gais
The Gais swimming lake “Baggalocke” is a swimming lake in Gais and has a sunbathing lawn and a bar. It is located near the cycle path.
The “Val Pusteria Cycle Path” runs past the village of Gais. The swimming lake’s proximity to the cycle path can be taken into account as a shared reference point when planning a day in Gais.
Ahrauen and Fireman's Helmet Museum
The Ahrauen biotope is a protected landscape that can be explored along the Ahr Experience Trail.
