Trails steeped in history
The Via del Mulino in Paesana is laid out around the watermill in the Croesio district. The mill’s mechanisms and water channel have been restored, and the watermill has been put back into operation. The Via del Mulino also includes the path to the Santuario Madonna dell’Oriente. For centuries, the sanctuary was associated with the local farmers’ prayers for rain.
Tra funghi e castagni in Paesana is a shady woodland trail. Near the Sant’Anna chapel in the Erasca district, this woodland trail meets the old Via del Sale. Le Vie Delle Fabbricanti in Paesana follows paths used daily for decades by the women of the local textile mill and heads towards the Erasca district with views of Monviso. The Via del Forno in Paesana runs along an old unpaved road; its name refers to a former bakery near the Erasca district.
The Paesana trail network uses Via del Sale signposts as well as horizontal white-and-red markings. The Passeggiata S. Maria in Paesana is an approximately two-hour panoramic walk with around 135 metres of elevation gain. The route from Pian Munè to Testa di Garitta Nuova follows a mule track to Pian Croesio and then continues along the ridge to the summit; walking time is approximately two and a half hours.
Nature and views
The Riserva Naturale di Paesana nature reserve offers an easy circular walk of approximately 2.5 kilometres along the Po, through riverside vegetation and permanent grassland. The Fontanone viewpoint offers views of Monviso and the Alpine arc. The Fontanone viewpoint can be reached from Baita Pian Croesio in approximately 15 minutes. Agliasco, in the municipality of Paesana, lies in a hollow from which Monviso can be seen.
Winter and rock history at Pian Munè
The small Pian Munè ski resort offers up to 16 kilometres of downhill runs served by two lifts. There is also a practice area with two conveyor belts. The Bric Lombatera archaeological site near Pian Munè features cup-mark rock carvings dating to the Iron Age, the first millennium BC.
The Parco del Monviso’s Migrans project will take place at Bric Lombatera for the 29th time in 2026. The project’s activities are carried out by Parco del Monviso staff and are open without prior registration to interested people and volunteer birdwatchers. As an alternative for the Parco del Monviso educational activity, Bric Lombatera can be used as the starting area; in that case, the start is from the forecourt of the Pian Munè mountain hut.
Cultural attractions around Roè
The Castello di Bagnolo, a castle, is located near Roè. Also located near Roè are the Palazzo Roletto, Palazzo Ricca di Castelvecchio and Palazzo Cacherano; all three are palaces. The Cima Bracco, Briccas and Punta Trento, each a summit, are also located near Roè, as is Monte Frioland, a mountain.
A former castle once stood in the municipality of Paesana above the road to Pian Croesio; only its foundations remain. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate, a 19th-century church dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot, stands in Paesana’s Calcinere district. According to local tradition, King Desiderius found refuge in Paesana’s Ghisola district. Possible traces of his stay are still believed to exist in Paesana’s Ghisola district.
