The historic center of Urbino is located in the Provincia di Pesaro e Urbino and in the Province of Pesaro, each in the Marche region. It preserves almost completely intact Renaissance walls with bastions, as well as the Ducal Palace, the cathedral, the Santa Chiara convent and a complex system of oratories. Urbino is considered a pinnacle of Renaissance art and architecture, adapted with exceptional harmony to its natural setting and medieval predecessor.
Culture
At the Museo Nazionale Rossini in Pesaro, located on the piano nobile of the Palazzo Montani Antaldi, ten rooms document the biography of Gioachino Rossini and his extensive operatic output. The archaeological site of Colombarone lies in the Parco Naturale Regionale del Monte San Bartolo, along the ancient Via Flaminia. The Bronzi Dorati da Cartoceto are the only gilded bronze group from Roman times to have survived to the present day.
The historic site of Palazzo Ducale and the ruins of the Fortezza Albornoz are also located in the surroundings of the Provincia di Pesaro e Urbino. Nature
The Parco Naturale Interregionale del Sasso Simone e Simoncello covers 4,791 hectares and lies in the provinces of Pesaro-Urbino and Rimini. The Parco Naturale Regionale del Monte San Bartolo has a spectacular cliff coast on the Adriatic Sea. The park reaches its highest elevations at the hills of San Bartolo and Castellaro, as well as near Casteldimezzo and Fiorenzuola di Focara. The area is important for bird migration and the wintering of various bird species.
The Cima Castiglione and Monte San Lorenzo mountains are located in the surroundings of the Provincia di Pesaro e Urbino. The Poggio le Guaine and Il Cimaio peaks are also found there. The Parco Naturale Regionale del Monte San Bartolo organizes nature excursions, motorboat trips, festivals and cultural tours.
Routes and regional activities
Itinerary 2 of the Parco Naturale Regionale del Monte San Bartolo leads from Fiorenzuola di Focara via the village of Casteldimezzo to Tetto del Mondo. The Pesaro-Fano cycle and footpath follows its own route and is well signposted. In the Acqualagna area, the CEA Furlo e Valle del Metauro offers, among other things, archaeological trekking.
The official provincial tourist map presents eight themed routes: sea, gentle hills and historic villages, parks and nature, culture, regional products, Roman heritage, family activities and events. Printed copies are available in Italian and English at the IAT tourist information centers in Pesaro, Urbino, Fano and Gabicce Mare.
Families and regional culture
In Urbania, the CEA San Martino offers guided educational visits for schools and families along the approximately 1,500-meter-long Bosco dei Folletti nature and fantasy trail. The trail is decorated with goblin statues and their houses and tells the story of a fantasy family. The Festa della Befana in Urbania is a traditional family event.
Acqualagna is considered the truffle capital of the Marche. Trekking, cycling tours and birdwatching are possible in the Furlo State Nature Reserve. An official discovery route through the olive-growing landscape of the Marche begins in Sassocorvaro Auditore in the Provincia di Pesaro e Urbino, near Lago di Mercatale. Sassocorvaro Auditore is known for producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil and is surrounded by extensive olive groves.
In Gradara, the “Il Medioevo a Tavola” initiative organizes days featuring medieval cuisine throughout the year. During these events, the town's restaurants are transformed into 15th-century taverns.
