Fermo lies on Colle Sabulo at around 320 meters above sea level and approximately 6 kilometers from the sea. Between this elevated location and the coast, a destination unfolds with a rich historical heritage, museums, theater, contemporary urban culture and beaches.

Culture and History

Piazza del Popolo forms the heart of the city of Fermo. Sixteenth-century brick arcades frame the square, which is also home to the city’s oldest public buildings. Next to the cathedral is the Museo Diocesano, housed in the former premises of the dissolved Confraternita del Suffragio. Its exhibits include a chasuble in Arabic style that once belonged to Saint Thomas Becket, as well as the Messale de Firmonibus, a codex illuminated in 1436 by Giovanni di Ugolino da Milano. The museum’s art gallery extends over two floors: the lower floor contains panels from the 15th and 16th centuries, while the upper floor displays canvas paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Fermo Cathedral has a Romanesque-Gothic façade and predominantly Neoclassical interiors. Inside, visitors can see the foundations of an early Christian basilica and an 18th-century crypt. Another water-engineering testimony from the Augustan era is Fermo’s Roman Cisterns; their entrance is on Via degli Aceti. Palazzo dei Priori is home to the Sala del Mappamondo, with a wooden globe drawn in 1713 by Abbot Amanzio Moroncelli.

The Biblioteca Civica Romolo Spezioli is also part of the city’s historical heritage. It looks back on three centuries of history and preserves 3,000 manuscripts, 127 codices and 300,000 documents. Palazzo Paccaroni houses the Museo Polare “Silvio Zavatti” and the Museo di Scienze Naturali “Tommaso Salvadori”.

Churches and Historic Spaces

The Chiesa di San Filippo Neri, also known as the Chiesa del Santo Spirito, was built from 1594 onward and consecrated in 1607. The Chiesa di San Francesco in Fermo is a Gothic church dating from the 15th century. It contains the tomb monument for Euffreducci, created by Andrea Sansovino in 1527. The Oratorio di Santa Monica is entirely decorated with 15th-century frescoes depicting the stories of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist.

The Teatro dell’Aquila in Fermo was inaugurated in 1791 and subsequently restored several times. Its annual program includes opera, music, theater and offerings for younger visitors. The open-air arena at Villa Vitali can be reserved through a municipal service. Villa Vitali itself is a 19th-century villa and is home to one of Fermo’s public parks.

The Terminal Mario Dondero houses a cultural space in a modern arrivals and departures station, hosting exhibitions and events. The Gabinetto delle stampe e dei disegni in Fermo comprises approximately 6,500 prints and 4,500 drawings.

Landscape, Coast and the Present

Parco del Girfalco offers panoramic views over Fermo. Along the coast, beaches with golden sand alternate with stretches of smooth white pebbles. Sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing are available at beaches such as Lido di Fermo, Casabianca and Marina Palmense.

Fermo is also home to FUM, an open-air museum of urban art. It includes a tour of the city’s murals as well as workshops and labs in a multidisciplinary space. The Cavalcata dell’Assunta provides a historical connection in the events calendar: this historical re-enactment makes its way through the city streets on the evening of August 14 and the afternoon of August 15.

Regional Cuisine

The traditional cuisine of the Fermo area includes Ciauscolo and strongly flavored local cheeses. Alongside the cultural and coastal offerings, this places a distinctive regional world of flavors at the center of attention.
