Location and mountain landscape

Apecchio lies at the foot of Monte Nerone between the Marche and Umbria. The town is located near the confluence of the Biscubio and Menatoio; the landscape around Apecchio is characterised by many trails and bodies of water. Hiking, climbing and cycling

Monte Nerone features limestone and karst landscapes with gorges, caves and crevices. These landscapes are suitable for hiking, mountain biking, climbing, caving and canyoning. Sentiero 236 leads from Apecchio through wooded terrain to Acquapartita. From there, you can continue along the Sentiero Italia towards Serravalle di Carda or Umbria. Apecchio is also a stage of the Ciclo Appenninica Alte Marche. Around the town, there are cycling routes on gravel paths and paved roads.

Bridge, palace and fossil museum

The Ponte Medievale, also known as Ponte a Schiena d’Asino, is a stone bridge from the 14th century over the Biscubio. It can only be crossed on foot. Palazzo Ubaldini is a 15th-century aristocratic palace with a loggia featuring eight columns and vaulted underground rooms. These rooms now house the Museo dei Fossili e Minerali del Monte Nerone.

The Museo dei Fossili e Minerali del Monte Nerone displays a palaeontological collection, most of which comes from Monte Nerone and includes ammonites as well as other prehistoric remains. Palazzo Ubaldini also houses the Teatro G. Perugini. The theatre has 42 seats and is active throughout the year through the SocietĂ  Filodrammatica Apecchiese, staging dialect comedies.

Opening hours of the fossil museum

From 1 October to 30 June, the Museo dei Fossili e Minerali del Monte Nerone is open on Sundays, public holidays and the days before public holidays from 10:30 to 12:30 and from 15:00 to 18:00. From July to 30 September, it is open daily from 10:30 to 12:30 and from 16:00 to 19:00.
