Bianzone combines ecclesiastical art, winemaking history and trails through a terraced landscape. The themes range from frescoes and historical traces to circular hiking routes, cycling and walking paths, as well as paragliding.
Culture, churches and historical traces
A significant cultural landmark is the parish church of San Siro: a large part of its interior is decorated with frescoes by Cipriano Valorsa. Bianzone also has seven churches, including the churches in the hamlets. This sacred heritage is complemented by frescoes on various house facades and wayside shrines along the roads to the meadows and fields. Those who explore the village and its surroundings on foot will therefore encounter different forms of religious and folk art, without all the motifs being concentrated in a single place.
The Statua stele di Bianzone preserves a much older trace. It was found in 2021 in the rooms of Bianzone Town Hall and preserves traces of a prehistoric decoration carved into stone 5,000 years ago.
Wine country and Tenuta La Gatta
The wine tradition is particularly evident at Tenuta La Gatta. It is located in a restored Dominican monastery from the 16th century and is surrounded by 13 hectares of nature. The estate includes an old wine cellar, vineyards, an open-air salon and a historic residence in a Valtellina winery.
The Wine Museum grew out of the school project “A spasso nelle vigne”. The project introduced children to viticulture and winemaking and involved families in recovering old equipment.
Terraces, circular routes and experiencing the landscape
Since 2008, the Ecomuseo delle Terrazze Retiche has preserved and promoted Bianzone’s historical, cultural and landscape heritage. The terraced wine landscape of the Costiera can be experienced along the Via del Vino, which passes through this area. The term terraces refers to the stepped cultural landscape; it does not define specific requirements or difficulty levels for the routes.
For a longer outdoor outing, the Col d’Anzana terra di confine is a circular hiking route starting and ending in Bratta. The Tappe dello Spirito circular route can also be travelled by bicycle.
Cycling and walking path through Valtellina
The Sentiero Valtellina is a cycling and walking path from Sondrio to Tirano that passes through Bianzone.
Other notable features
Paragliding takes place in the high-altitude location of Nemina Bassa in Bianzone. The Sagra di Sant’Anna is still celebrated in Piazzeda in the second half of July. It combines a liturgical service in the small church with a day of enjoying typical local dishes.
