Gisazio is considered a small hamlet situated above Lake Como amid the forests. Locally, the place is also known by its dialect name, “Sasc”. The main points of interest are not large complexes, but individual trails, buildings, and places shaped by the community.
A route description for the Sentiero del Viandante leads to Gisazio via a pleasant clearing with the Chiesetta della Maddalena. The well-known trail also crosses the stream flowing down from Gisazio over a small bridge.
The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena stands in the village and dates from 1596. Its altarpiece is attributed to Giovanni Battista Fumeo.
Trails and Historic Washhouses
Gisazio is also connected to a route through the hamlets of Perledo that leads to historic public washhouses. These include the Lavatoio di Gisazio. The route is approximately 7 kilometres long and focuses on places that once formed part of everyday community life.
Perledo’s historic public washhouses served as communal meeting places. Women washed their laundry there and exchanged news. For a hike, this creates a connection between movement and local history: the trail not only passes through the hamlets but also helps explain the washhouses’ former social function.
Church, Village History, and Community Life
A book about Gisazio created with the support of the community recounts the history and traditions of the place. Residents contributed to its creation. As a result, the focus is not only on a single historic building, but also on the community-supported memory of Gisazio and its local customs.
Another expression of community life is the “Pollibreria”. The book-exchange project in Gisazio became a focal point of the village. At least two events about the village are held there every year. Here, books and events come together in a specific place for exchange.
The older history of the village also includes the Maresi family, one of the oldest families in Gisazio. In the village, they ran a namesake osteria, which closed around 1958.
