Cross-country skiing and paths through the mountain landscape
In the Cagnoli district on the outskirts of Branzi, there are three certified cross-country ski trails with a total length of 7 kilometres. One trail is of medium difficulty, while two are difficult. The loops are 3.5 and 5 kilometres long. This gives you different trail lengths and two designated difficulty levels locally for planning your day.
The route Gli alpeggi dei Laghi Gemelli also begins in Cagnoli. It follows trail marker 212 towards Lago delle Casere and ends at the Rifugio CAI Laghi Gemelli. From Cagnoli, the route takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. The route is therefore a separate, longer activity alongside the ski trails.
The route Contrade Branzi leads from San Rocco along CAI trail 117 towards the hamlet of Belfiore. It also reaches the hamlet of Cornello. This lies like a natural balcony overlooking the Branzi waterfall and the entire village. For a shorter nature observation, the La Borleggia waterfall is located near the mountain village of Branzi, can already be seen from the village and can be reached via a short path to its foot.
Historic places and insights into local work
In Branzi’s historic centre, in the Carbunì area, lies the Ponte romano. The bridge has been restored and is still in use. It is therefore one of the specific local destinations that can be combined with a walk through the centre, without presupposing the character of a currently operating winter sports facility.
The Chiesa di San Sebastiano is located in Cagnoli. It is dated to the 15th–16th century; 1575 and the 17th century are cited for its completion. In Branzi itself, the Chiesa di San Pantaleone was built in 1690. The two churches represent different historical periods within the local history.
The Museo delle cave “Le piodere” di Branzi is dedicated to the work of the “pioder”. It features a photo exhibition, includes the historical short film “La pietra nera” about the quarries, and presents historical tools as well as a reconstruction of the working conditions at the time. This allows the local history to be explored not only through buildings, but also through specific work processes and their presentation in the museum.
Branzi cheese and Bergamasque cuisine
The traditional production of Branzi cheese originated in Branzi. This semi-matured hard cheese is made from full-fat raw cow’s milk; at least 90 per cent of the milk comes from Bruna Alpina cows. The cheese usually matures for more than 60 days.
Branzi cheese is used in many dishes of traditional Bergamasque cuisine. Historically, Branzi was also an important centre for the exchange of milk and cheese. At the end of the alpine pasture season, such trading took place during the Fiera di San Matteo. This gives you a regional perspective on a food product, its production and the former economic importance of the village.
