Valbondione: Discover Mountain Trails, Waterfalls and Culture
Accommodation in Valbondione
If you choose Valbondione as the destination for your stay, you will find several clearly distinguishable points of interest here: paths to waterfalls, an easy hike to the Diga del Barbellino, historical themed trails, distinctive religious and festival culture, as well as a cycling connection through the Serio Valley. For your planning, it is therefore particularly useful to consider which landscape or cultural experience you would like to place at the centre. The routes differ in starting point, destination and length; at the same time, several routes lead to the waterfalls or into the mountain landscape above Valbondione.
Routes to Maslana and the Cascate del Serio
From the hamlet of Grumetti, CAI Trail 332 leads across the Ponte della Piccinella bridge to the Osservatorio Floro Faunistico di Maslana. The trail then continues into the Grandi Macigni area. From there, the Cascate del Serio are visible. This sequence connects a specific starting point with an observation destination and a view of the waterfall, without classifying the route as a loop or assigning it a specific walking time.
Another access route to the Cascate del Serio begins at Via Curò in Valbondione. The signposted CAI Trail 305 leads towards Rifugio Curò and onwards to the Grandi Macigni area. Important for route planning: you do not have to continue along the trail all the way to the rifugio to reach this area. This means that the route can be considered as a separate section, rather than automatically planning the rifugio as a necessary destination.
Maslana itself can also be reached on foot. CAI Trail 332 or CAI Trail 305 can be used for this purpose. These two trails provide two accesses to Maslana and different starting points for orientation on site. Anyone wishing to compare the routes can first check whether access via Grumetti or via Via Curò better suits their planned day.
Water, Reservoir and Mountain Landscape
The Cascate del Serio are 315 metres high overall and consist of three waterfall tiers. These dimensions give the waterfall a clearly recognisable landscape scale. The Cascate del Coca are located in Valbondione.
Another landscape landmark is Lago del Barbellino. It is an artificial reservoir above Valbondione and lies in the former Barbellino depression. It is also considered the largest artificial lake in the Bergamasque Orobie. The historical name of the former depression serves to classify the lake and should not be confused with a statement about its present-day use or a specific access route.
An easy hike leads to the Diga del Barbellino and begins in Valbondione. It follows CAI Trail 305 towards Rifugio Antonio Curò and is 6.5 kilometres long. The specific length makes it easier to compare this route with the shorter or differently oriented sections leading to the Cascate del Serio and Maslana. The starting point in Valbondione makes the hike an independent planning element for a stay in the town.
Culture in Contrada Bondione
The Chiesina di Santa Elisabetta stands in Contrada Bondione, within the municipality of Valbondione. The small church building was constructed between 1647 and 1659. For visitors interested in culture, this place therefore provides a precisely datable historical reference.
The Chiesina di Santa Elisabetta contains an altarpiece by Domenico Carpinoni. It depicts the Visitation of Mary to Saint Elizabeth. The subject connects the name of the church with a specific art-historical work. Anyone preparing a visit to Contrada Bondione can therefore include not only the church building itself but also the subject depicted and the artist in their cultural consideration.
Santa Elisabetta is also associated with a recurring festival. The festival of Santa Elisabetta is celebrated on 31 May. In Contrada Bondione, the celebration takes place on the third Sunday in July and includes a Mass, a procession and an outdoor lunch. Both the fixed date and the differing date in Contrada Bondione are important for your scheduling.
Historical Trails and the Pista ciclabile
The Sentiero dei Carbonai e dei Poiat is located within the municipality of Valbondione and combines physical activity with regional history. At 19 marked stations, the trail explains the historical production of charcoal as well as the construction and functioning of the “Poiat”.
For arriving by bicycle or taking a longer tour through the valley, the Pista ciclabile della Valle Seriana is relevant. The cycle path begins in Ranica and ends in Valbondione after 60 kilometres. Along the way, it follows the riverbed of the Serio.
The different route lengths make it easier for you to choose according to your desired focus: 6.5 kilometres characterise the easy hike to the Diga del Barbellino, while the Pista ciclabile della Valle Seriana describes a much longer connection of 60 kilometres. The routes to Maslana and the Cascate del Serio, in turn, are distinguished primarily by their starting points, CAI numbers and destination areas. This allows you to plan your day around specific route features without equating different routes or waterfall destinations with one another.
If you would like to include another destination in your selection alongside Valbondione, you can also consider Lizzola.
